Even before I do a detailed review of the game, the DL generally must have been doing something right considering the outcome.
No doubt, they did. Lot of harassment coming from different areas, with Marinelli mixing up his pressure calls. Linemen and linebackers converging on the ball carrier, good man coverage, etc.
All those things worked together for a good defensive game, and we need to continue being at least a harassing defense up front and strong in the LB corps and secondary (which has looked pretty good since Scandrick took back the starting role).
Spencer, Crawford and Melton seemed especially active at first glance among the DL, while Mincey seemed to have a pretty good "busy" game. Didn't really notice the rest, but again that's with seeing only three-fourths of the game.
Would love to have more game-changers on the line (obviously), but the waves are working for now. Think if we had a more disruptive 1-tech and a true edge rusher to pair with Mincey at right end, we'd be in real good shape. Spencer/Selive sharing left end isn't a bad combination, especially if Spencer gets all the way back to form.
If Lawrence is what the team hopes, then we could have all the pieces except 1-tech in place this year ... and I don't know what to make of Brent possibly being that 1-tech monster.
I am pleased overall, though, that Crawford seems to be living up to his hype, that Melton is bouncing back OK from his injury, that Mincey is a decent rotational player and that Spencer is showing signs of full recovery. Selvie is what he should be expected to be, so is Hayden, probably McClain, Coleman and Bishop at this point.
