END QUARTER 2

What is the best trade down scenario with our first pick?

If Tyron Smith plays that long... you'd be right, and obviously you think so. however, Larry Allen in the second round comes to mind, and there are an equal number of names that can support the opposite side of the argument.

There is not 100% proof that Tyron Smith is not a Ryan Leaf type bust. I'd rather take 5 chances than 3.
Uh, I'm the idiot on this forum who is not talking about Smith as our best option. I've got Patrick Peterson fever so bad a photoshop of him in a Cowboys uniform is my desktop image.

I would trade up to take him and don't care what it costs. A trade down for Tyron Smith would thrill me.

Having yet another Max Unger or Steve Smith scenario hit us, would be time to throw up. I'll take the 3 picks over the 5 picks if one of the 3 is the guy we absolutely want.

Trading down is a double edged knife. You get more chances to hit it big on prospects, but the quality of the prospects in the pool becomes poorer each time you trade down.

I would prefer to trade up for Peterson, take BPA or trade down. I don't think Tyron Smith is a top 10 talent, so the only way I would draft him is if he were available after a trade down; the difference between him and Castonzo, Carimi, etc. is so minor that it would be made up by adding another young body to the roster.

I believe Smith has a lot of untapped potential as Carimi is almost maxed out imo.

I like Carimi too and would be happy to add him in a trade down if Peterson/Smith is unavailable.

Darren Woodson37
Larry Allen -46
Erik Williams - 70
Jason Witten - 69
Jimmy Smith36
Randall Godfrey 49
Dixon Edwards 37
Darrin Smith 54
Dexter Coakley 65
Flozell "What's the snap count" Williams -37
Andre Gurode - 37
Sean Lee - 55

here's the counter list... And I'm beginning to think that we should acquire the 37th pick if at all possible.

Who's Flozell Williams? :D

That's really the judgment the Cowboys have to make. Is Tyron Smith's skill set clearly far above the others? Are Castonzo and Carimi on a second tier?

Whatever their answer to that is will be the pivot point for trading down.

It seems the blue chips end right around the time that Dallas picks. So we're right on the edge of the second tier of the first round. Some team might be interested in the last blue chip talent in an area we don't need, like a 4-3 DE, so we could make a killing in draft picks for that.

Also it's cheaper to pay multiple guys 2nd round money, than to pay top 10 talent ridiculous money.

He's a cross between Flozell "What's the snap count" Adams and Erik "What's the snap count" Williams.

You got me.

:lmao2:

If we stay at 9 and get Smith then in 3 years when Smith is a bust everyone will add him to the list with all the bad picks. I dont see much difference in Smith, Carimi, Castanzo, or Sherrod for being a RT. I don't care about which player has potential and upside and the best to maybe one day be a LT. If I can trade back, add two extra picks that are starters and still get a starting RT, than thats a great draft.

Just because someone puts a list on here of the bad players we drafted in the mid rounds but then didn't even bother to add a list of the good players Dallas drafted in the mid rounds doesn't concern me.

Every team has had bad picks and yes some teams have even missed and picked bad players at 9. Just because you think staying pat and picking at 9 is the best choice. That pick at 9 can still become a bust. Then what?

In my personal opinion, Smith and Carimi are on an a pretty even field based solely upon what I have seen of them in college, with Carimi given a slight nod. What scares me is that the only reason Smith is being rated as a top 10 talent rather than mid to late like the other tackles, is either because Dallas needs an OT or because he has a higher ceiling.

I just put some crow in the smoker for you. I'm sure it will be ready well before three years is up.

I don't know if he will be a bust or not but I also don't think he is the next great thing like some. I was just saying that more of a what if scenerio. If Smith becomes the 9th pick overall and turns out to be a bust everyone on here who wants him at 9 will then be the first ones calling Jerry a dumb *** and would always come back to this draft as either a make it or break it draft. If Smith is a bust then this draft is broke and so are the cowboys for another 3-5 years.

Not sure. But I know who Flozell "whats the snap count?" is...:D

Anyways...listing players who were hits vs. misses in the top 71 should have no correlation with the team's draft strategy.

If the Cowboys would be happy with a guy like say, Benjamin Ijalana (or howere you say his name) and would prefer to spread their eggs out rather than putting them in one basket, then trade down. You can get more quality players but less star potential. If thats what we want, then theres nothing wrong with that. But if we truly feel like Tyron Smith or whoever we are targeting at 9 is the next star, then why get cute?

I wouldn't complain with either scenario (as long as we draft an o-linemen with at least a top 2 pick). Who doesn't want Patrick Peterson? I might not want him as bad as Hos, but I would definitely have one of these :)D ) on draft day if we landed him. But I must say that we aren't one player away, so trading up for him doesn't really make much sense (not saying that I won't do it...rather I'm saying its an iffy but satisfying move). If we like what we see out of Sherrod, Costanzo, Carimi, Benjamin, or even Solder, then trading down seems like our best bet.

Carimi is more polished, but potential wise, doesn't have much more he can gain. Smith is only at the beginning of what is possible with him. He has shown the ability to play at a high level, he is physically superior to Carimi in every way. I don't think a single NFL scout or coach doubts that Smith is far and away a better player than Carimi. The problem I think most look at is Carimi is ready to start today. Smith needs some work. Either way, if I were a betting man and had $100M I would bet that Smith goes several picks a head of Carimi. Not because I'm some know it all, but because Smith will be far and away a better player than Carimi.

Smith isn't a Bruce Cambell, Jason Smith, or Alex Barron. He is closer to being the next Ryan Clady than any of those guys. the only down side is you would want him to stick around one more year in college, but I promise you this. If he did, he would NEVER be a Cowboy because he would go top 5 in the draft. The Cowboys haven't had a top 5 pick since 2003 when they drafted Newman. Odds are damn slim that they will have one next year either.

I don't care if Carimi is the same player he will be for the next 10 years if that means he will be a great starting RT, thats all I need him to be.

Calling Smith Ryan Clady is out there. I don't see the comparison.

NYC I have no problem picking Smith in the 1st, just don't want him at 9, more because I want more picks to add more players.

That's what scares me. The mentality that one player is more polished and projects to play right away, but this other player has more potential so lets draft him in the top 10.

I didn't mean to imply he would be the next Ryan Clady, I was saying that he has more similarities to Ryan Clady than he does Alex Barron and the other guys.

Physical talent they all have, but Ryan Clady and Tyron Smith have never had their work ethic questioned. That can't be said about Bruce Cambell, Jason Smith, or Alex Barron. Therein lies my comparison to Clady.

Go back to 2008 draft, Clady and Smith are very similar.

I don't think you can lose with either one of them. Just one you can win bigger. Do I want to win a RT or a franchise LT?

Give me the LT.

I have a franchise LT. I have a LT in Free who should have went to the Pro Bowl this year. Free graded out as a top 5 LT in the NFL this year. Free played more top pass rushers the year than any other LT in the NFL and did pretty damn good. I have a LT for the next 5 years. Smith wont come in and start at LT day one. So I would rather have a starting RT and two other good starting players than just Smith.

Clady played LT for how many years at boise St. He was much more polished coming out of college. Smith isn't polished and needs work much like Barron, Justice, and Campbell.

I think Jasom Smith is a real good comparison to Tyron Smith. If he turned out to be Jason Smith that wouldn't be a bad pick.

Or, do I want to win a RT at top 10 LT pay or a RT at mid round RT pay and pick up a 2nd round pick in the process? ;)
