END QUARTER 2

What is the best trade down scenario with our first pick?

I have a franchise LT. I have a LT in Free who should have went to the Pro Bowl this year. Free graded out as a top 5 LT in the NFL this year. Free played more top pass rushers the year than any other LT in the NFL and did pretty damn good. I have a LT for the next 5 years. Smith wont come in and start at LT day one. So I would rather have a starting RT and two other good starting players than just Smith.

If you draft a LT, he can still play at RT until needed at LT.

Down the road you have a competition to see who earns the LT spot. If the newer guy does, you move free to RT. If Free does you keep the newer guy at RT.

You put yourself in a box by only wanting to draft a RT. You should always want the guy that you (by You I mean the team) feels can play both sides, esp in the first round.

What if Free goes down during a season. If you have another OT that you feel can play LT, you move him over. It is easier to plug in for a RT than a LT.

Remember this is not about what YOU think, it is what the TEAM thinks about what he can do. That is not to say you can not give your opinion...I just think sometimes people on here get so locked into what THEY think is right, they don't think about what the TEAM thinks is right...even if they are wrong. :p:

Or, do I want to win a RT at top 10 LT pay or a RT at mid round RT pay and pick up a 2nd round pick in the process? ;)

Your mindset should be you take a LT, a player you (again you meaning the team) feels can play RT and LT eventually.

If the team takes Smith at 9...I seriously doubt they think he can only play RT and never be able to play LT.

Just something to consider for those that keep saying...why draft a RT in the top 10.

But no one on here knows what the team thinks. Who is to say Smith is a LT. What has he proven in college, he has never played LT so why does people just think he can do it at a higher level. Carimi, Sherrod, and Castanzo has all played LT and vs better competetion.

Clady played LT for how many years at boise St. He was much more polished coming out of college. Smith isn't polished and needs work much like Barron, Justice, and Campbell.

I think Jasom Smith is a real good comparison to Tyron Smith. If he turned out to be Jason Smith that wouldn't be a bad pick.

Clady played both RT and LT at Boise State.

Yes, Jason Smith would be a bad pick. He was drafted with the second overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft as a LT and then the Rams drafted Rodger Saffold with a second round pick the following year and then moved Smith to RT and Staffold to LT.

You don't draft a guy who has work ethic and weight issues with the 2nd overall pick in the draft. The guy is Alex Barron 2.0.

Tyron Smith has never had weight issues (being fat) or work ethic issues. He has always been known as a hard worker.

I agree but if Dallas first option is to trade back and then if they can't trade back they go Smith at 9, well thats mine too. They obviosley aren't crazy for Smith if they are more than relying to trade back first.

Thats what I'm saying. My first option is to trade back. If I can't trade back then go BPA and if Smith is my BPA on the board then I go with him at 9.

no Jason Smith is better than Barron. He may be a bust due to being the #2 over all pick but he is a good solid player. If we draft Tyron Smith 9 yes I hope he turns out better than Jason Smith but thats the chance you have to take. That years draft, Jason Smith was being talked about just ads high if not higher than Tyron Smith is being talked about. So you have to ask yourself if taking a not for sure OT that high worth the pick.

I agree. All but one of the 1st round tackle prospects have starting LT experience and would be able to transition quickly to LT if Free gets injured but be able to play at RT out of the gate as well.

I really enjoy this conversation. Completely breaking down the philosophies of why or why not to bet it all on the player at #9. Riveting.

That's why this is far and away the best Cowboys website out there...

We do know the team thinks highly of him.

They have scouted him a great deal during the year.

I don't think they would draft him at 9 if they did not think highly of him.

Again...this is not about what you think, it is about what the team thinks.

The best trade scenario is to get the player who fits your system. It would suck to trade down and miss the guy you targeted. I would suck to stand still and see the guy you want taken. If there is a player you want, get him. Don't try to get cute.

agree, can we email this to Jerry please

The best trade scenario would be trading down for New Englands two #1's this year plus a 1 next year then somehow still landing Peterson and Smith with this year's picks and Andrew Luck with next years 1. It may not be realistic, but it's the best scenario.

no reason to make all of those trades... it would cost you to loose a player you want...

take the highest guy on your board at that point(probably Smith) and dont look back

Whether or not you think trading down is a good idea, which scenario is best? Could Dallas get 3 picks in the top 40? top 60? What do you think?

personally, I am certain that the Cheatriots will not trade up, they seem to own draft day, at least this year.

I wonder, could Dallas trade away their lower picks for better picks next year? Trade a second for next years first, etc.

Because this year is highly suspect anyway, I'd love to have a great selection next year when we pick players who have actually played football in the past season.

How do you know that the Patriots won't trade up? They have six picks in the first three rounds. They could package 2 or 3 picks and trade up and still get 4 or 5 players in the first three rounds. They normally try to grab picks for the following seasons draft, but which team in the NFL will be willing to accept picks from the 2012 draft? No one knows if there will be a draft in 2012. Bill said a few days back that the Patriots have traded up for players in the past. It wouldn't surprise me if they traded up for A J Green if they thought they could still get themselves an decent OLB.

I think the best scenario would involve Dallas dropping down to #12 via a trade with Minnesota.

My reasoning would be that Minnesota wants to grab a falling Quarterback, maybe even Jake Locker, and are afraid the Commanders might select one.

Dallas could trade down to 12 and still be ahead of Detroit, who is the other team in the top 15 looking to draft an OT. Dallas would be free to take Tyron Smith.

The problem with my scenario is that Minnesota doesn't have a 3rd round pick, a 2nd round pick is too pricey to only move up 3 spots, and a 4th is too cheap. More than likely a 2011 pick would be part of the deal, or Dallas would get the 2nd, but have to give their third back.

I don't know that they won't, I just think that they won't. They sit there, smug, with a ton of options, and don't seem to panic about any player. They seem willing to pounce on people who get a little too wrapped up in a high risk player, play their cards right, and get a better pick out of the deal, this year, or next.

It's ugly.

They're not going to deal, unless they get the advantage. Thanks Al Davis.

The best scenario would probably be if 1 of the QB's(Newton or Gabbert) falls to #9, or Possibly AJ Green. I could see a team trading up and giving us a decent package for 1 of those 3. If we can get a pick under #25 in the 1st round + a 3rd and 5th round pick it would be well worth it. We could then go...Camiri/Solder/Sherrod in the 1st and Willimas/House/Harris for the secondary in the 2nd. This scenario would be ideal in my opinion.

Trading from 9 to 18 would give us that teams 1st and second round pick, 18 and 50.

Anything lower than 18 gives us their 1st, 2nd and something more.

#9 is worth 1300 points. This is not exact, and is not used precisely, but is a general guideline for trades.

A 1st below 25, a matching 3rd and 5th for the #9 overall pick is a huge loss for us. 900 from them for 1300 from us.

Wasnt aware that there was a chart, but seems like we wouldnt get that much. Maybe Im wrong though. Has this chart worked in the past?

yeah and I'm sure the Jets wouldn't have drafted Vernon Golhston top 10 if they were high on him either. Just saying.

Yes, the chart works... sort of. There is variation depending, really on how badly a team wants the player at the pick, and how the in place team perceives their pick value.
