What is the next big innovation in the NFL?

The 70s saw the 4-3 and shotgun (both of those were Cowboys innovations I believe), the 80s saw the West Coast and Buddy Ryan's 4-6. The 90s saw ... ? Recently we've seen a revitalizing of the 3-4 scheme and the Tampa-2 has been popular as well. It seems like teams are figuring out the Tampa-2, but the 3-4 seems to still be doing fine with the proper personnel. Who knows how long that will last, though, with so many teams having picked it up.

Do you see a philosophy or even an individual coach that might innovate the game anytime soon, whether a rarity in the NFL, something from college, or something completely new?

I don't know if it's a innovation but I have noticed alot more college type plays in the league than ever before, stuff like options.

It won't be long before the spread offense hits the NFL. Shotgun, 5 wides every down will be the norm for several NFL teams by the end of the decade.

I hope alot of teams install the Zimmer defense, starting with the Seahawks.

Do you think this will actually work in the NFL? What team that didn't pound the ball has won a Super Bowl recently. NFL defenses are just too fast and good to be putting the ball up 50 times a game and not getting the ball turned over.

Quite possibly the multiple lateral as an offensive innovation. With track stars specializing in this.

As for NFL pageanty/merchandising I would say a half-time NASCAR race or high-stakes poker on a couple of hands. And Jerra, if you steal my ideas, I'm in for 50%. ;)

The '99 Rams and nearly '01 Rams, but not to that extreme.

This isn't Madden...your QB wouldn't survive 3 games in the chuck and duck.:laugh2:

YES! I'm waiting for the players and coaches to remember that the backwards pass is a legal play.

And free kicks. I'd like to see somebody free kick it once in my life.

They threw 100 times more than they ran in 99, Faulk rushed for nearly 1400 yards.

They were a tad less balanced in 2001, but Faulk ran for nearly 1400 that year too.

The last team to really run it was the Oilers in the early 90's with Moon, it worked so well it caused Buddy Ryan to punch Kevin Gilbride.

No Superbowls. But one really big playoff choke though!
