Is this Houck or our lumbering linemen ?

With so much beef in the line & 2 good blocking TEs and hard running RB ,we can't move the pile for 4-5 yards every time ? Go figure .:(

Well I heard someone said they were losers, so I'll go with that.

They're losers. That's my answer.

We average 5.0 yards per carry.

That's #2 in the league, by the way.

I know we are second in the league in YPC but it just seems like we cant get a consistent push. it seems like we are either busting out long runs or getting stopped around the LOS. I personally don't have a problem with our running game (when we use it) but I can see where others would wonder why we don't seem to be able to gain yardage consistently

it's the way we use our linemen

they are asked to be nimble when they clearly aren't

except Kosier and Free

although according to Football Outsiders, they are the 2nd best run-blocking unit in the NFL

I would say they are under-utilized, and aren't allowed to get into a groove because they are asked to play unbalanced, because we pass the ball so much out of the shot-gun

We've had a good running game for just about every game but the last.

From what I saw this past game, was the right side of the line was having problems opening things up for carriers. When they did, Marion Barber would run more into the pile than break off of it. There were a lot of off side catchup and tackles as well. That means the runner is dallying on his way to the ball before breaking or setting something up.

Myself, I would give more carries to Teshard Choice earlier in the game, and mix it up with Felix Jones through the middle portion of the game. Then close with the pounding of Marion Barber as it went down back with Julius Jones and himself carrying the whole load.

This last game, I think that Leonard Davis didn't have a very good game overall, and allowed pass rushers to slip around him too often. In pass protections, the team usually does well, but still makes mental mistakes and Tony Romo has to evade rushers from the outside too much still.

The team might load up in double tight end formations with a fullback to pound in short yardage as well. You know, force issues even if things congregate at the line of scrimmage, as play action is always an alternative then as well.

i dont think my point came across clearly and im not exactly sure how to explain what i am thinking. i know that we get nice numbers so we must be doing something right as far as the running game goes, but im not sure if i trust our team to pick up the yardage on a third and 2 or 3 on the ground.

Like i said in my last post, it seems like we are an all or nothing running team. we'll get 10 yards then 0 and that'll average to 5 but we dont seem to be able to pick up 4 yards here and 6 there.

im probably not making my point any better/clearer and i may be completely off base. if so, then by all means let me know because my perception may be off.

Its scheme, our running plays are predictable...shotgun draw, felix to the outside, choice in the razorback doing what he always does.

FootballOutsiders's DVOA has the team ranked as 7th in the league in 3rd and short situations.

That sounds about right to me. I don't think the problem is with the team.

our OLine makes me think that size is overrated. they are very inconsistent, Leonard Davis especially. one play he will plow through 2 guys the next he misses a block on DB.

Hey sounds good to me. Not the first time i've thought wrong and definitely will not be the last.

That's because he is all power and little to no quickness. Imagine going up against Bigg and he steam rolls you, the next play you might just want to side step him and make a play..

excactly, but the problem is our whole OLine struggles with quickness. i remember thinking we should have run all over the Falcons but we struggled. it was because they have a smaller quicker front. our rushing stats are propped up by huge games, namely the first Giants and Panthers games. we then had a good rushing game against the Raiders but all other games were average to mediocre.

That's why making adjustments on the fly is paramount.

As stated earlier our line is heavy and slow.
Also - in the NFC east, at least, our line averages over 3 years older than the 3 other teams(per player).
In fact, the team I expect to win the NFC east, average very close to 5 years younger(per player) than our Cowboys line.
I guess the question is; does the experience of age overcome the quickness and agility of youth?
