What kind of team is Garrett building?

I think that there a few front 7 from the first 3 round drafts missing here. It looks like the Giants drafted about 40% front 7 guys in the periods listed above in the first 3 rounds. They paid up for guys like Canty and resigned a bunch of their original front seven picks. The Giants have reaped the rewards of good drafting in this area with a number of keepers (no need to use first rounders on the front 7 every year when you have this much talent). I see nothing to suggest that the front seven hasn't been a priority of this team.

During the Giants recent 5 year Super Bowl run, the team has been built and played around their front 7 - averaging top five over that period for sacks and pressure, and they have also controlled the clock via a somewhat balanced offensive attack - other than last season, when the line and running game fell apart, they have ranked within the top 10 in terms of time of possession. They also play with focused emotion and purpose during crunch time. They seem to relish the big game spotlight.

For many fans, the front seven is the first thing that comes to mind when asked about the Giants. Your second point is just false. Of course the head coach in very involved in the draft and defense. Garrett hired Rob Ryan. You are not giving Garrett credit for his basic job functions.

I agree with that, but to be fair, I'm not sure how much influence Coughlin has either.

Sintim 2nd round lb in '09 , Wilkinson 3rd rnd lb in '06 add em all up and you get 40% of the team's top draft picks dedicated to the front 7, more importantly, a lot of good picks that are still on the team.

The still have Thomas, Phillips, Amukamura.

Aaron Ross was a good cornerback as well left this year as FA.


Deon Grant and Antrel Rolle were also top picks but were FA additions.

This is half right. The Giants have selected pass rushers, corners, and wide receivers in the first three rounds dating back since 2003. (except 2004)

While it is easy to say that they built around their front 7 that is simply not the case. They have invested in first round DBs and have also gone after free agents that were top roound picks like Antrel Rolle and Deon Grant. If you want to base on the model of success that they Giants have done for themselves than you simply take the best skill position player available on your board, it's that simple.

I'm saying that they also invested in secondary players to help the front seven. They just didn't put guys off the street back there.
