I went way too cheap with my last one, a 350 Lenovo and the battery is so bad that it essentially is tied to the wall. Doesn't last much over an hour.

What devices would everyone recommend? Historically I've been a Windows guy, have heard some good things about the Microsoft laptop.

Maybe the Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition.

I currently have a 15" Samsung Series 9 /w Core i7, 256GB SSD and 8GB memory. (weights around 3.5lbs) It's been a great laptop, but it's about 3-4 years old now. Will replace it probably next year.

on my third Toshiba Satellite in 15 years. All have performed above expectations and are competitively priced. To be blunt anymore I really doubt there is much difference between any of the major brands. Figure out what you want and buy the cheapest one with it.

Cowboy Brian mentions having a poor experience with laptop battery life. I had a string of bad experiences with three straight Dell laptop purchases. All three laptops' batteries went kaput after only two or three months. Maybe it's just my bad luck but I would caution anyone getting a Dell and expecting lengthy battery life. My latest laptop is a Sony Vaio that has served me well over the past two years.

Which laptops? The 13 XPS gets great reviews and it's a higher quality laptop then *some* of Dell's offerings.

They are just about all the same now.

The only thing you should concern yourself with is the hard drive,

1. Get an SSD not a HDD. (It will cost more but so worth it)

2. Make sure it's at least i3.

That's it. You are done!

Forgive me Sam. My last Dell was from six or seven years ago and I do not remember the models.

Nope, an absolute minimum of 8GB, (only if you just can't afford 16GB) but would highly recommend 16GB of memory. Both of my desktops have 32GB, but I'm not your standard user.

I would also go with a minimum of 4 cores. That is more important than how fast they are.

Friendly advice: Figure out what you are really going to use this Laptop for and then find something that works for you. Toshiba has been a quality Laptop for years but their service record and time to replacement are terrible. Also expensive. IBM, for years was among the best on the Market but since they sold out to Chinese Lenovo, there are issues there. Not the least of which is a history of inappropriate practices from the chinese, loading Laptops with malicious programing.

You can get cheap or high end from anybody, if you are interested in something that might be cheaper but provide good bang for the buck, give a look at Acer. They seem to have a good price/performance point.

Good look

Do you have the newest MacBook Trouty? I've been wanting a laptop for a while, I usually an Apple guy. I kave a mac desktop and ipad, no longer an iphone user though.
No, I have a 2015 model, the first launch of the non-disk drive.

They last forever. I had a 2011 model before that that I gave to a friend and was working like a champ. He still uses it.

I'm Apple everything, too, Lukin! <high-five!> :)

I've been waiting and still undecided. Apple has been eliminating connectivity ports on the newer laptops, the one port I would miss the most is the SD card port. So for me I'm waiting to see if they add the port back in the future, otherwise I'm deciding between the Surface laptop or MacBook. I generally prefer Mac because of their durability as well and of course OS rocks compared to windows! As for the phone, I went cheap, Samsung, the phone is not used 95% of the time so I didn't see the need for a big investment.

I have a Lenovo Z570 that I got in 2012 and I have Kubuntu Linux on. It's still going strong, though if I were to buy one today I would probably get a Toshiba and put Linux Mint KDE on it.
