I love Witten and all but to suggest he's just as good a pass catcher as Antonio Gates tells me you haven't seen enough of Antonio Gates (with all due respect to Witten). Gates is invaluable and by far the best overall TE in the league.

Gates is faster and he does catch more passes than Witten thanks to the design of his offense. But Witten has better hands than Gates.

Look at the stats in 2006.

Antonio Gates caught 120 of 203 passes thrown his way. 59%
Jason Witten caught 92 of 131 passes thrown his way. 70%

Witten has better hands than Gates, and they threw less at him. He is a better pass catcher than Gates. If they had thrown to him 203 times, Witten would have caught approximately 142 passes. 22 more than Gates.

Plus, I believe everyone here agrees that Witten is the best blocker out of all the "elite" Tight Ends. (Cooley might be up there though) And that, to me, makes him the best overall TE in the league.

Tell me, would you trade Witten for Gates? Witten for Winslow, Cooley, Shockey?

Those stats have little to nothing to do with who has the better hands. "Better hands" is a completely subjective comparison.

Passes thrown his way doesn't mean those were catchable balls.

Yeah, also not taken into account is those times that Gates was doubled and under more pressure from the defense cause he is their #1 option.

I like Witten, but would trade Witten for Gates or Winslow in a half second. Now, for Cooley or Shockey, don't really think it would matter so I would just stay with Witten. TGon revolutionized the TE position, and now Gates and Winslow are and will take it to the next level.

I would trade Witten for Gates in a heartbeat. Gates is a ridiculous pass catching threat. He is much more of a vertical threat than Witten. Gates and TO on the same team would be just stupidly good.
