What Pete Carroll told Jerry about Brian Schottenheimer

Like the decision or not, the man is there and he’s in the position. And we as fans need to give him the chance to prove himself. He knows what he signed up for. I think there’s a chance he may surprise us all.

Give him the talent and see what he can do. My worry is the roster, not the staff

He was so good as an O coordinator that he was fired. He was so respected in NFL circles that he never got so much as an interview for a head coach position by any other team than the Cowboys.
He interviewed with the Jets. He was requested to interview with the Bills and turned down the interview!

I get it but it’s exactly what makes me hesitant to buy in. A play caller who was let go for becoming too passive happy? The same play caller was the OC for the cowboys last season where a major issue is they were too….pass happy? I get the run first talk sounds great, and he’s assembled a coaching staff to support it, but I need to see it in action and see this front office actually go get some guys to run the football effectively.
The only times in his career as a play caller that the QB didn’t throw 500 passes were when Rex told him to, Sanchez rookie season and when his starting QB got hurt. He relies heavily on a lot of play action… it’s basically the Coryell with some aspects of west coast!

I dint think it's that people "won't like it"

But I think most fans that have a lick of sense realize coaches will always talk up other coaches.

I mean really....when is the last time you saw a new guy get hired as a head coach or coordinator on ANY team...where coaches he's worked with in the past said "oh man, that guy SUCKS"

we could have hired the assistant long snapper coach that worked for 5 days under Pete Caroll, and if someone asks about that assistant long snapper coach Pete would be all "GREAT GUY, HE'S READY!!! HE BELIEVES IN PHYSICAL OLINE AND DLINE PLAY. He's a big culture guy. HE WANTS TO RUN THE BALL'

It's just meaningless fluff that means nothing. Just something to put in an article. Think of the WORST possible coach you can think of, who totally flamed out and got fired after 1 year...and I guarantee you THAT guy had things said about him like this when he was first hired.

Meaningless fluff... but not bad or good. Just irrelevant. I'm sure (hope) most people in here are smart enough to know that.
I think most know what you are saying. However, it will not deter them from their agenda.

Let me take this from a complete different angle.... Just the fact that Jerry had to be reassured is telling......

The greatest coach could endorse shotty and you guys would still find a way to twist it negatively. :muttley:
Because those endorsements mean nothing. The fact that no other team chose to even give him a interview says way more

No it does not.
His statement is correct. Fans will find a way to spin negativity on any news.

Although we don't really know the details about why Carroll would fire him...it is a cause for pause.

Maybe Pete just wanted a different face or system?

Not saying it makes anyone liars or phonies....but...it is a slight contradiction.

So heres the deal:

Schotty is with our franchise now since 2022. First as an Consultant(!) then as the OC.

Now our Top Notch GM needs to get advice from someone who was together with him 7 years ago. And this guy who ran Schotty out of town tells our great GM that Schotty now(!) is ready. Without having the needed working relationship with him for years now.

And then JJ decides. Because? He is not able to judge this guy by his own working with him together in the last few years (which he should have done, right) ?!

Make your own thoughts about that. But my trust grows to unexpected heights in our GM.

Oh boy, some will not like this. And invent some negativity.

Good to hear this actually from a HC that some can respect.
I was telling Jerry indirectly through this forum he should fire Garrett and hire Kyle Shanahan when he was OC of the falcons. Just goes to show some of us fans know what the team should do better than the owner/ GM.

You cannot know how he will be as a HC
Some coordinators make great HC's and some do not

Everyone always wants the hot young coordinator but a lot of them fail

so having a guy who has been there all down the line and has a lot of experience is not a big risk actually.

Frankly, I prefer him over KM
might be dumb but there is is

Lol words vs actions. Huge difference
Actions - A well respected coach has good things to say about another coach, getting his 1st chance as a HC.

Words - Stupid comments for many fans because they feel the need to always be negative.

And you think that qualifies you as a GM / Owner. Would have hd the same success here as elsewhere. Just because some think they know it all and know better.

I like his staff and he could do very well. My hesitation is based on our free agent history
No doubt! In the end it's all about having good coordinators and good players. The head coach needs to recognize & distinguish good from bad and he must manage the GM so that he gets the right players. We'll see how he does but that GM would rather balance his spreadsheet and prop up mediocre "stars" than build a balanced team.

Im a UT Vols fan and remember when the great Nick Saban endorsed Derek Dooley saying he was “doing a fantastic job at Tennessee.”

Not unheard of for an opposing coach to recommend another team hire or keep an inferior coach.
