not many. Wade Phillips is too loyal of a coach. doesn't like to play rookies and doesn't like to replace people due to poor performance. Nick Folk getting cut was long overdue by the time it happened.

Yeah because there were so many guys out in free agency better than Folk.

We have seen guys like Ellis released to allow Spencer to take over we have also seen players time decreased. As the season went on Barber saw some of his min decreased as did RW we also saw a rookie in Phillips get some min this past season as well as Ogletree.

Wade is not going to play pre-season football during the season,he will go with proven players over those who are still learning and developing. It is easy for any fan to claim who should play but then fans are not at practice and meeting you do not know what the player understand and how far along that player is the coaches do have a better understanding based on day in and day out facts.

Spencer starting playing more for Ellis (though Ellis got the complimentary first snap start). Jenkins over Scandrick. Austin over Crayton. Phillips over Anderson. Various kickers over Folk. Holland took over for Procter for a short while.

You shouldn't stoop to my level. : Rossum was brought in to replace Crayton and it wasn't necessarily because of poor performance the Cowboys just felt Rossum was better. The fact is he never officially set up to return a punt so if you want to count Crayton as being benched as the punt returner even though he returned punts the entire season that's your opinion. Rossum handled the ball once on a KO return and that was it.

He was signed as a punt returner but he never even set up to return a punt because he got hurt on a kickoff. To making a benching "official" you would think a player would have to sit out at least one play in favor of another player.

The plan was for Rossum to replace Crayton as the punt returner but it never happened because he got hurt. Had Rossum not got hurt he would have replaced him but all that went up in smoke with his injury. To have an "official" start a player has to be apart of one snap. It's hard for me to say Crayton got benched when he never missed a return except for the two situational returns Newman had.

The OP wanted to know if a player ever got benched during the season because of "poor" performance. I don't view replacing a decent punt returner with one who provides you with more big play potential in the same light as a player who's getting benched for "poor" performance. I never felt Crayton was a "poor" punt returner. He got benched as the starting WR not because he was playing poorly but because Austin played so great. When a player gets benched for "poor" performance a team usually drags whatever body they have off the bench to replace them because they're desperate. Rossum was signed during the season because he became available and the Cowboys felt he would add a little more to our returns. If Crayton was terrible Newman would have taken over the punt return duties before Rossum was ever signed.

I'm aware of all of that. Had Austin not had his 250 yard breakout performance against KC Crayton wouldn't have gotten benched as the starting WR at least not after week 5. He was going to get replaced as the punt returner primarily because Rossum had been cut and became available. The Cowboys saw an opportunity to upgrade with Rossum but he got hurt. Maybe it was a blessing because it fired Crayton up and it resulted in some great returns.

Facts are Rossum never returned a single punt so that benching never actually happened. :

I'm not arguing that he got benched at WR but he was our punt returner the entire season last year. Rossum was signed to replace him and I'm not arguing that either but he never lined up to return a single punt. It's all a matter how you want to look at it. Had Rossum fielded one punt last season with Crayton standing on the sidelines that signifies a benching to me. It's my own personal view so you need to get over it because it ain't changing. LOL

If we are counting special teams positions (like punt returner), then there is one more:

Mat McBriar was replaced as the placekick holder, by Romo.

I guess you could say that RW11 and RB3 became second-class starters late in the year - they continued to start, but lost snaps to others who looked better, before the season ended.

If some of you want to include Crayton at WR as being replaced due to poor performance because Austin had a career day or because Crayton was "going" to be replaced at punt returner because Rossum suddenly became available and the Cowboys saw him as an upgrade then that's your opinion. I would rather list players who actually did get replaced because of poor performance like Bledsoe in 06.

IMO, the most interesting fortitude that Wade has displayed in the realm of player accountability/"best man for the job" was the Scadrick/Jenkins experiment. Special teams don't really count.

Even though Crayton was replaced as the starting WR in week 6 he still out gained RW by 26 yards and was only one reception and 2 TD's behind him. Crayton's YPC average was 16.8 compared to RW 15.7. If RW doesn't pick it up next season he may be the next player benched during the season due to poor performance. Ogletree may be the player who provides him with his stiffest challenge next year.

I think when you compare wades #s with the history of the NFL, it appears he is tolerant of poor play.


The actual question should be how many starts have lost a position battle in training camp in Wades entire career as a head coach! I would say it can't be more than 1 or 2!
