What role will Kevin Burnett play next year?

It usually takes a player about a year to fully recover from an ACL tear. Edgerrin James did not return from his injury at full strength until a full year after his injury. I don't think Burnett will be able to contribute next year, but it isn't because he's soft. He will do his best to play, but he will not have his explosion until about next Jan. Unfortunately there things happen and we have to be patient. He has the talent, but we're going to have to wait for his health to return. We shouldn't give up on him. Jimmy Smith had health issues, but when he was finally healthy he tore the league up.

Having met the guy when he played here in TN, he looks a little thinner than 240 to me. He definately wouldn't hold up @ MLB. He's one of those guys who is cut to ribbons...lot of muscle on a medium frame. Don't get em wrong, he can do a great job when he's healthy, but I can't see him lasting long in the middle. Once healthy, he'll give plenty to smile about...just have to keep him on the field.
J. Farrior plays ILB for the Steelers and he's 6'2 243, and Foote plays right next to him at a whopping 6'0 239. And this group was 4th in rushing defense so I think Burnett has the perfect size.

Jimmy Smith was considered a bust too. Lets let Burnett get healthy before we consider him a bust.
Im not jumping to conclusions because of his lack of playing.
I said last year in TC that somethig just wasnt right about KB.
Too cocky, maybe.
In any case, he may be good but I dont think BP likes him or trusts him. Therefor, he might be a bust.

I expect Burnett to make a push for a starters role. Injuries are part of the game and he has had to deal with them which set him back. If he can enter training camp healthy then I expect him to make a strong case for being a starter.

Hmm...

a second round pick LBer who barely played for a team in dire need of LBers...

I don't see what's so funny.

None. No role at all. A late season ACL tear means he'll be even more hobbled than normal in training camp and next year will be all but wasted. The guy can't walk and chew gum without getting hurt.

You can move DE to OLB, if you have enough DE for roster breakdown. If he was say your RDE and you had only one more, simply sign a free agent RDE and then move Lawson to OLB. Don't sign a LDE though, you have to have atleast 2 of each, which is why if you only have 2 they wont let you move one to another position.

I tried. They let me switch his position, but just not to OLB. For some reason it doesn't let me in franchise mode (strangley they let me go from OLB to DE though).

That makes no sense to me at all.

I don't consider Burnett a bust after one year, but to believe he'll make a big impact next year is blind faith to me. I think he'll have some impact despite the acl tear, due to being more familiar with the defense, and hopefully playing in all 16 games, but I don't think he'll be huge playmaker.

He'll bulk up and move inside to try and replace Dat. Anyone who's ready to give up in the guy after 1 injury riddled season should chill out. Most of you would have already dismissed Brady James and he came on strong last season.

Unfortunately... I agree with you. I have a bad feeling he's always going to be nicked up.

And that hip surgery that he got last summer without telling the team was a very strange decision on his part, too.

I think he's got loads of talent -- that's not the question. It's just that, like you say, it won't be much -- if any -- longer before Parcells won't trust the guy. And that's nearly a kiss of death.

I think you're right on the money with this. Fowler looks to be the ILB main backup. James will likely call the plays. Fujita on the Strong side and possibly Thornton on the Weak Side as backup. Shanle could stick if we keep 8.

I'd rather add an inside LB in the draft than rely on James, Burnett, Fowler, and Shanle. That doesn't sound like a very secure unit to me.

Actually, the timing of his injury means that he will be clear for mini camps and ready to go for TC.

He's an LB -- not a WR. It isn't going to have a huge impact on his play, especially if he moves to the middle.

He will be ready to play, but his cutting ability and burst will be severely affected. Alot of people don't return to form until the second season from the injury. I don't know how much of his speed he needs to play ILB, but he will not be the same physically for awhile. I expect more out of him in his 3rd year.
