What snap counts from the 49ers game tell us about potential roster decisions

We finally got to see the 2018 Dallas Cowboys in live game action. Now it’s time to look at some playing timedecisions and what they could tell us about the eventual makeup of the team’s 53-man roster. While many players are already guaranteed a roster spot, many are competing for a right to wear the star. We’ve divided the roster into three groups:
  • Those certain to make the team
  • Those competing for a spot
  • Those providing training camp depth with virtually no shot at making the team

The default category for a player is “competing” if their status could be argued either way. Also, while offensive and defensive snap numbers are informative, decisions on many of those competing for roster spots will come down to their ability to contribute on specials teams. Keep that in mind as we look at each position group.

Finally, once final roster cuts are made the Cowboys are likely to make a move or two. This could be trading a player not likely to make the Cowboys roster, trading for a player currently on another team or picking up a player who was cut by another team. All things to consider.

its been said but I look over these names and we're cutting some quality this time around and in the future
based on McClay's judgement and skills.

I just sit back in amazement of it all.

But that's the price you pay when you have so much talent like at WR, TE and DT. Everyone loves having a Geoff Swaim, Blake Jarwin and Dalton Schultz on the field but that probably means you have to cut a really good player there to make the room.

The other 31 teams are merely parasites in Will McClay's world.

BTW, snap counts the first preseason game tell you almost nothing. Cool article.

Not taking this article as to what player is on the team or not.
After the draft most fans that do not follow the team, and for the uninformed ones that do keep somewhat updated. Well, they can even get the top 40 correct or close to it.

Those that are more informed can get to 45 fairly east and be 95% correct.

So one PS game does not from a roster from snap count. This next game could be the opposite. And some of those players get more snaps, and others get less. Can't see every player in all the games so the coaches can see what they want to see.

getting 3 starters/contributors a year thru the draft is very successful, our problem has been more about the coaching than the drafts since mcclay/stephen took over that role. this year it appears gallup, Williams and vanderesch will all contribute a lot. possibly antwuan woods. taco's improving. Lawrence became what they hoped. but the influence of mcclay(gm to be) and Stephen extends beyond just personnel. Kris Richard and sanjay lal were brought in by them as well.

correct despite the hidden hostility

Exactly. You have nothing. Just hollow words like "sat in the seat" and delusions of actual results.

We're about to go into a season with a pathetic group of skill position players, the worst we've seen here in two decades, and you're praising the assistant to the assistant to the fake GM.

the problems pertaining to dez and the surprising retirement of witten have nothing to with mcclay. we responded to both situations as best we could given the short amount of time to react. we also addressed problems with swing tackles. nothing better coaching can't overcome.

Notice the lack of any substance to back up what he said.

Just rejoice that McClay is sitting in the seat and the reason why we're getting all these great results.
