Exactly. As much as I like the two guards, there will be other good players at #18.

Allow me to think out loud for a minute. Let's assume 3 tackles go before us. 1 QB, 2 guards, 3 DEs (Ansah, Mingo, Jordan), 2 DTs (Star, Floyd), and 1 CB.

That's 12 players. Here's what players COULD be available for us. I will bold the players that I think we would target (in no particular order):

1. Tavon Austin
2. Sheldon Richardson
3. Jarvis Jones
4. Cordarrelle Patterson
5. Bjorn Werner
6. Kenny Vaccaro
7. D.J. Fluker
8. Xavier Rhodes
9. Slyvester Williams
10. Datone Jones
11. DeAndre Hopkins
12. Tyler Eifert
13. Jonathan Cyprien
14. Alec Ogletree
15. Keenan Allen
16. Tank Carradine

Is Cyprien expected to be a first round pick?

Jacksonville and/or Philly make this draft for us IMO. If Jville takes Geno at 2 or Philly at 4 then I'm not going to be suprised to see Buffalo take Nassib or Glennon at 8, then the upset pick of the draft that's been picking up steam is EJ Manuel to either NY Jets at 9 or Tampa Bay at 13. Quaterbacks not teams are going to be what makes this draft for us.

I just don't see Cleveland spending a first round pick on a QB this year. They took Weeden in the first round last season. They'll give him one more year.
I agree. I think Norv would like a year with Weeden. If they have a bad year, then they still landed a top player of lower risk than Smith this year and are set up to maybe get a better QB next year.

If Cleveland takes a QB, I don't think it will be with the 5th overall pick. Not this year.
They could trade down, pick up the draft pick they lost last year when they landed Gordon, still get a QB...maybe even the very same QB.

Its a new regime, he is not their guy.

He is the guy for at least one more season. Teams don't typically give up on a first round pick after one season. Norv Turner will want to see what he can do with him before they give up on him.

Yes, I would not want to trade up for a Guard; however, for this player, this year for this team, I would consider doing it.

I would have to be convinced that he is not going to fall to #18 anyway.

I think the Cowboys may have a very difficult no win situation coming up on draft day. Let's suppose all of the players that Dallas would select at #18 are gone except for one and let's suppose that player is Cooper and he is the top rated guard on our board as well as the last player on our board with a first round grade.

Let's say that you are pretty much certain that he is going to go one spot above you (possibly in a trade up) and the asking price to move up is a 5th round pick.

If you don't trade up you lose out on all first round graded prospects, lose out on the top rated player at a position of need and lose out on the possibility of getting a guy who can help you this year.

On the other hand, if you move up, suddenly you don't have a 5th round pick or a 7th round pick to fill holes with. Suddenly the running back you had slotted to pick up in the 5th round is no no longer an option in the 5th. You could try to trade back in the second or third round, but what if doing so costs you that saftey in the second that you wanted, or Armstead. Have you really helped yourself? Maybe not.

Regardless what they do, the move would likely get criticized in perpetuity.

Philly picks 4th.
I think we sometimes forget the value of a pick that high; I know I do.

The 4th overall pick is worth TWO #18 picks, or nearly that. For perspective, using the equivalent of two mid 1st round picks to take a Guard would be really unheard of...almost totally out of the question.

I guess they could trade down to someone who really wants one of the OTs, pick up an extra second rounder, and still get Cooper or Warmack if they wanted. But they won't spend that 4th rounder on one of them.
imo
