From the mind-set that Landry was untouchable.
I knew even then that Johnson would be an upgrade to the miserable so-so seasons that Landry was putting up. Atter the first season I was wondering about the upgrade thing, but knew there would be the necessary rebuilding.
As far as the "could have been handled better" firing, I find it ironic that the man who put out to pasture so many legends or waived younger ones without so much as a wave of the hand would bellyache that "it could have been handled better."
What's better than a golf course? A sterile office? Out on the practice field? A cocktail party? And the word during that time was that Landry was proving hard to find, flying around the state, zigzaggin around town.
When Jones got word he was at the golf course, the action was set in motion.
Also, the first year Jimma went to the Super Bowl, Landry was interviewed and was asked if he would attend or watch the game. Landry said he'd be too busy to view the game. hmmmmmm.
When Landry was good he was very good. LWhen he was on the descent he was just bland, predictable and boring. And bad.
