The only real problem I have with the Landry situation was how it was done. I can not fault Bum Bright for selling the team. I can not fault Jerry for wanting to pick his own guys to sink or swim with.

I can hold Jerry, Jimmy and whom ever else might have been in on the idea to fire Tom over the air waives. That was straight out Bull **** and Tom Landry deserved better then that.

As I said I blame Bum Bright because he knew what was going on well in advance. Deals like this do not just happen overnight. I do agree Jerry in his excitement made some bad PR moves but Bright could have informed Tom what was going to happen.

Fired Landry and Hired Johnson, what were u thinkkng about Jerry Jones...

I was happy with a new coach, mad at jerry for not offering Landry a front office position, but been a Cowboy fan I always roll with the Franchise and not the player, coach or anyone else.

I was shocked. I never heard of Johnsonand and was like 'WHO?'.

I reserved judgement, as the boys were in a downward cycle at that time and decided to see what the new regime had to offer, once a loser, anythings better then the present. I will say I was upset about the way Landry was fired, not so much that he was, when you buy a company, you have the right to clean house if you like, but be a man about it and do it face to face and show respect for what was. I thought Jones disregarded the tradition and did not respect Landry. But I never thought about not being a Cowboy fan just cause Jones bought the boys and fired Landry, just wish hed showd Mr Landry a little more respect.

Did you not watch college football? Jimmy was well known in college football because of the Hurricanes, but I can see not knowing who he was if you aren't a big college football fan.

I agree with that. Bright was a carpetbagger all along. I never liked him. However, the right thing should have been done from Jerry. Jerry had a long term goal in mind. He was in it for the long haul and he should have paid respect where it was due. Bum Bright rode away like the carpetbagger he was. Jerry Jones is a part of Dallas History and the sorriest chapeter in that history book, I'm affraid to say is his handling of Tom Landry.

I thought change was needed, but didn't care for the way Jerry did it.

I was excited about Johnson coming in from a pro-style offensive team like Miami. I obviously never expected it to turn out as well as it did though.

I think Jerry could have done a better job and let his own excitement cloud his better judgment and even Jones would later say that was a mistake. I do feel more bitterness towards Bright as Tom's boss and the owner at the time. Bum took the money and ran and Jerry was made out as the bad guy and I never felt that was fair.

I can agree with you that he was made out to be a bigger villan then he actually was. That is a fair statement IMO.

I guess I just look at it, especially as time has gone on, in this way. If a total stranger lies to me, it's a drag but it's not the end of the world. If my own Son or Wife lie to me, it's still not the end of the world but it's much more difficult for me to accept. I just expect more out of those people then I do Bum "CarpetBagger" Bright.

I was mad as Hell when Jerry let Landry go the way he did. I have no problem with any owner firing anyone, but this guy Landry was/is the DALLAS COWBOYS and he deserved much better than he got from a hillbilly owner. I never like Jimmy either for taking over for TOM.. as a coach and to show respect for the Cowboys, he should have told JJ he would wait until Landry was informed and given a chance to step down.

I know Jimmy brought in some Championships here,, and I watched every game and cheered for everyone of them. But I will never Like Jones or Jimmy for what they did to Landry.

Good post.

Landry had what ?...28 years ? Most impressive is his unparalleled string of 20 consecutive winning seasons, placing the Cowboys in the playoffs in 18 of those years.

He had 8 seasons under .500 in jis career and 5 of those was with a new franchise. Back in 1960 they were no given a supplemtal from every team, nor where they even given a draft picks at all in 1960. Take away those 1st 5 years (of any franchise for that matter) the guy had 3 losing season in 23 years.

I guess it was growing up watching and admiring the guy. The Cowboys have and will always be my team, but it will never be like it was.

I honestly didn't mind that it happened. But I had a major problem with the way it was handled.

It just seems to me Jerry has been behind the 8 ball since day 1. I think back to the other group who was looking to buy the team (Japanese investors) and was damn glad to have Jerry step up and buy the team. Jerry being seen at a Mexican food restaurant with Jimmy was enough for the media to run with the story and before you knew it all hell broke loose. I think the strange thing for me was hearing so many hollering that Tom needed to be fired and when it happened people were upset, honestly I don't know of an easy way to fire anyone but I think if Bum would have been upfront with Tom and Tex things would have gone smoother. One other note after the 87 season Bright wanted to fire Tom and it was Tex who convinced Bum to keep Tom
