What We Should Expect From Porter

Now that we have Joey Porter on the roster, and I am firmly in the positive on this trade, we need to temper expectations. Defense takes 11 guys. Porter will be one of them. I expect he will make the defense a little better but I do not expect miracles, and there is one caveat.

The HC and DC are not going to become geniuses just because they signed a quality CB. These two are still going to hold the Cowboys back. My enthusiasm for Porter is more about next year. I have high hopes with Porter, Q, Barham and Downs this defense can be something special next year and the year after IF the coaching improves.

With this talent on the roster, and behind these guys we have Bland, Overshown (if he can stay healthy), and Durant, with promise from Overton, Ezeiruaku and Lawrence I see no excuses for why this defense cannot excel this season and carryover into next season.

We've been saying if this defense was just average, this team can win a lot of games. This defense should be better than average - if CP or someone else can get them ready to play and let them succeed.

Porter is not THE answer. He is one answer to one issue on defense.

I expect half decent coverage

Im not asking him to be elite….all i ask is that he contest passes and if he gets beat so what

Im sick of seeing men wide butt naked open with enough time to hit the dougie before they catch a pass

I expect quarterbacks to look another direction 1st.
That's what we need. A guy that can take away an offensive option and allow Dallas to double the other guy if needed. Right now QBs can just sling it wherever they want.

....nothing less.

Hopefully this opens up opportunities for bland to be opportunistic to grab a few interceptions

Well, if Porter is as advertised - and as the data suggests - his ability in man coverage will have a ripple effect throughout the defense because it gives you greater numbers advantages in coverage.

He can make a bigger difference than any other player they could have reasonably acquired.

Has porter been at practice at all this season? I know he sat out all of camp. I’m very skeptical he’s physically ready to play this week.

He isnt quite that good. It might work out that way because every other corner is so bad that looking that way is better. However Porter is not Mcduffie (who was also traded this offseason). He is a tier below that so a top 20ish corner who is probably going to get about 25-30m per year after this season from the Cowboys.

If he can help buy half a second for the rushers to close in it will be huge.

I'm not trying to suggest he is shutdown. Only that typically you target the weakest link. Obviously it could depends on who he is up against, routes being called, defense called etc. But Dallas only has 2 CB's and some safeties that were sitting on a couch. He should help.

My concern is that they didn't work out an extension prior to the trade. Good on them for bringing him in for a 2028 second rounder, but if this becomes a 1-year rental and a distraction next offseason, even that is a steep price to pay.

That said, I love that they're adding defenders. As you pointed out, the defensive core is starting to look respectable. I don't expect worst-to-first, but it's something to build on, and something we didn't have this time last year. It means they're bringing on another big contract, but they've needed to reallocate funds towards the defense for years. I just hope they have a plan to retain Porter's services that doesn't include a franchise tag and a holdout.

There were so many holes to fill on defense, it's unrealistic that just one player to plug all of them.

You are right. This is a great piece to add to the mix!
