What would you change about this offseason?

This off season was an incredible one for the Cowboys. They got some great free agents, in area's where we had to have them.

Dallas also had a wonderful draft. The defense will barely resemble the poor defense of last year... and that is in personnel alone, much less the scheme.

I couldn't be happier about the way things fell.

However, since it's slow for news right now, I thought I'd sit and think about what I might have done differently had I been in charge.

So I ask: If you could change one or two things we did this off season what would it be?

For me, it isn't an easy question.

What I know I wouldn't change are these moves we made:

Ferguson. He's critical to what we want to do on defense, in a 3-4 or a 4-3.

Bledsoe. He was the best that was available and quite an upgrade over Vinny.

Henry. I think he's just what the doctor ordered at the RCB position. We need more defensive playmakers and he is inately a ball hawk.

Rivera. He'll help solidify the entire OL and his impact will be greater than just helping one position. Character. Toughness. Leadership. I loved this move.

Ware. His raw athleticism is immense and what he does best is something we've needed for almost a decade.

Spears. This guy is going to be better than everyone thinks. Because of his 40 time and his college sack numbers most people didn't want Spears as much as Ware, Merriman, Pollack, etc. Believe me folks, he is going to be a great, great player. What he'll bring to our defense is so far beyond just sacks that people are going to wonder why this guy wasn't a top 5 pick. Closest thing I've seen to Reggie White. I know, strong words for a rookie who hasn't played a down, but I'm ecstatic about this guy's ability and character.

Barber. I think he's perfect for JuJo's partner. He won't mind playing second fiddle and he's very talented in his own right. As good as Parcells is at finding running backs, it wouldn't surprise me to see Barber play like a star himself. The dropoff from Julius to him shouldn't be that huge.

Canty. How can you not love getting a guy this talented in the 4th round. His upside is huge and gambling a 4th round pick on someone with this much ability was a no brainer, IMO.

Glenn. He'll be a tremendous 3rd corner and push the starters in some of Parcells much loved camp competition. He brings ability and leadership.

A-Train. Great veteran addition to a young RB corps that is chock full of youth and inexperience. He's a tough guy too and that never hurts to add to a team.

Other than the late round picks, which I loved, the one glaring ommision is Kevin Burnett. I really like Kevin, but here's what I would've done differently:

I would've brought in Ed Hartwell as a free agent. I think he would've been perfect for Bill's new 3-4. He's one tough guy and he plays perfectly in a 3-4. He's much better than most thought because he was constantly overshadowed by Ray Lewis... but he's a very, very good player in his own right.

Since that would've given us another experienced linebacker, who has played well in a 3-4 and who is still young, we could've gone in another direction in the second round.

Burnett was somewhat of a steal in the second round, so I might would've gone ahead and added him, even with Hartwell in the fold. That would've given us a spectacular LB corps. But since we did have Hartwell, we could've used that pick on:

Khalif Barnes. I liked him for RT and he probably would've won the starting job from day one.

or

Terrence Murphy. I think he's going to be a very good WR.

or

Matt Roth. Very good value in the 2nd round.

or

Mike Nugent. The K position would've been filled for a long time.

Anyway, I'm just killing time until training camp, but if I had to do anything differently, I would've brought in Hartwell and drafted Barnes. I like Burnett enough that I might have drafted him anyway and just had a LB corps that's stacked. However, Barnes would've been great to get because I think he could play from opening day.

What would you have done differently?

for some weird reason i wanted garcia instead of bledsoe i think garcia can be a great QB like he was a few years before and not to mention he is mobile. i also wish we got hartwell and i really wanted the cowboys to pick up darren sproles instead of barber but i'm happy with barber besides that it was a great offseason

This off season has only one major flaw. It is dragging on forever. I have no complaints about the personnel we acquired or the personnel we let go. I'd love to have kept Coakley but finances prevented it.

Nothing I'd do different in the draft. I thought it went perfect from the 1st pick to the last Cowboy chosen , but I have a right to change my mind at years end.

Kareem McKenzie to play right tackle.
Maybe D. Sharper for safety.
Me too!

Those are the only two players it 'hurt' me to see sign elsewhere.

Both came with considerable price tags tho, and Jerry shelled out enough on Henry, Ferguson, Rivera and Bledsoe.

Those spots have just got to be manned by players developed in house, or care-taken by a Reese level player for a year or so.

As much as I think Mac would have been a strength at RT for a decade, it's better knowing the cap space to re-sign Jason and Roy will be there (hopefully).

Agreed ,besides No one in the NFL has a perfect roster.
If our draft picks work out we should be as close as most.

I think we should have signed FS Darren Sharper and should have drafted WR Terrence Murphy. But I'm not complaining.

It has been a brilliant off-season and honestly, anything that I can say at this point would simply be nitpicking.

A better RT even though hopefully Pettiti will be the long term answer

FS - Sharper would have been ideal you can't have an all pro at every position

I think Jones and Parcells had a very good offseason overall. I like what they did, but I would have done things slightly different.

In FA:

Wahle over Rivera (can play RT if none of the kids step up, is younger and healthier and the extra cost is worth it)

Pat Williams over Jason Ferguson (more of a true 3-4 NT)

Hartwell instead of Anthony Henry (a true nasty 3-4 ILB)

I'd have also gone after a backup 3-4 NT for a one-year deal - Traylor was available earlier

In the draft:

Corey Webster over Burnett - I think he'll rebound to his spectacular form as a junior

Wouldn't change a thing. With the development of guys like Rogers, Ware, Spears, Burnett, Davis, and others, we can now draft BPA for a couple of years and not force picks. Then it makes it that much easier in FA to plug in certain positions, and that includes WR.

I'd have a good backup NT for Ferguson (other than just Glover - two different players) and would have signed a quality LB. I worry about out LB depth, especially inside, if we move to the 3-4.

Ask me in a month from now. If we get Wright and Crosbie then I will be jumping for Joy! If we don't get either I will not be happy, especially Crosbie. As for what we already did, perfect IMO, if we hadn't gotten Canty I would have been very dissapointed, I really was hoping we would get this guy, really made the draft for me! He is the Saun Rogers of this years draft.

Easy I think Bledsoe is this year's Eddie George.

I just hope that Henson can play like Jones did when he replaces him about week 9.

I'm with you on all of these, except maybe I'd have taken Eric Green instead of Webster, but I still like Webster;also, I would have taken Courtney Roby, 'cause he has been likened to a young Marvin Harrison and I think we need someone to replace Terry Glenn in a couple of years. Taking him now would have given him time to learn without being pressed into service right away. Waiting until next year to take a receiver might put too much pressure on a rookie to step up if Glenn or Johnson can't play anymore. I like Crayton and Copper, but they're complementary types.

Exactly. I wanted to take Jason Jefferson on day two for depth. If Ferguson goes down or is ineffective, we're back to where we were before. That was mistake we made last year with Marcellus Wiley, not drafting a youngster to back him up in case he didn't work out. We seem to assume that just because sign someone, they'll automatically work out. That's why I wanted to draft in conjunction with the Henry signing. This way we'd have competent veterans to hold down the fort until the youngsters are ready. Aaron Glen adds depth, but he want help us in the future.

I agree with you on the Bledsoe part, but Henson is relearning football. Guys like him almost never work out. That's why udfa Romo is second on the depth chart on just about any publication you can find. Our scouts should focused on getting us a real QB in the draft next year.
