What's the deal with Thornton?

Reading between the lines, he's struggling with the one-gap transition. Plus, the team has always really liked McClain, they couldn't get him on the field.

That said, the performance of the DTs was one of the most perplexing and concerning things from Sunday's game. That wasn't even a very good interior OL or running game they were going against and they were getting linemen on our LBs. Not good.

1T is still two-gap in a 4-3, right?

Again, Thornton is coming from a 3/4 defense. To now playing the 1-tech. Give him at least half a season before we start crucifying him. If, by then he hasn't taken the starters job, we are in big trouble. Everyone on the Dline is too light in the pants, but that's how Marinelli likes them. Only Collins, our backup rookie 3-tech has decent weight, and he is coming off a broken foot so another player needing time.
Sorry, but our defense is what it is now. We have to live with it and hope they improve as a group - I've complained all off-season about this group. Numb to it now, and hope for the best, - that's what our FO has done.

It's essentially the same position in this defense.

Thorton is 92. in the 2nd pic he held a double team which is what he was supposed to do but the LB 56 was easily blocked out of the play. In the first pic he came off his block but his own teammate 96 was blocked into him.
He didn't hold the double team. That's the problem. Did you not notice that one of the players came off 92 and blocked Lee out of the play?

Well not having a Fletcher Cox{or anyone even close}on the line isn't helping things.

Oh my lord. That's it. Never again will I spend much time on here after a loss. So far we need to get rid of Dez, Tyron, Collins, Fred, Martin, Zeke is a bust, Witten needs to announce his retirement before game 2, Dak is not even back up worthy, T Crawford and Thornton need to go because one will never create pressure again and the other won't see the field again, Sean Lee and Scandrick now suck, and Byron Jones is a bust as well. What else have I missed?
Dare I point out the really big one that you missed? Ahem, just look at your avatar. How dare the Cowboys draft another injured player. After all, he'll probably never play football, right?

Did he 1 gap in Philly? He's two gapping here.

That's essentially what he said during the preseason. The position is not what he is used to playing and he's still getting used to the responsibilities of the 1-tech. It's easy from the outside to say that transition should be simple, but there's a lot more to learn than just lining up differently.

THORNTON IS A BUST, CUT HIM!!!!

Ok, sorry I had to get that out my system. I see people say it all the time for all sorts of players and I always chuckle, whether deserved or not. This was my one and only time.

PS. I think Thornton will be just fine.

it just never ceases to amaze me how a player a team is willing to part with, that is not a name player like Norman or Ware or Suh, turns out not to be great. Another man's trash is another man's treasure?

I think Thornton is lying in wait for then 8th game and he will unleash all hell upon Philly.

It's a bit premature to write him off but yeah............... not good. I thought he'd be an immediate impact player at the 1 Tech.

Maybe he just looked good because he played next to Fletcher Cox and Bennie Logan.

I think I would look good playing next to Fletcher and Bennie Logan Damn I wish we got Fletcher Cox in that draft some years back

On the first play, you should be asking why the linebackers are out of position. On the second play, he just got beat on a double team. You could also ask why the linebackers were completely out of the play.

Thornton was the 2nd best DT on our team last week. He wasn't bad at all and I think he will get better as he gets more comfortable.

That's like winning a Leper beauty contest.

Was telling everyone during the pre-season he was garbage...Why is everyone shocked he's garbage now?

This can be fixed....go get that Okoye kid ASAP:rolleyes:

McClain was actually one of the better players on either defense on Sunday.

So having him win the job isn't some terrible indictment.

I'd like to see more out of Thornton.

I thought we got him on a reasonable contract, but he hasn't had much impact.

Again, it makes me question the validity of playing the run on the way to the QB.

He didn't win the job he just never lost it. Why fans who had all of OTA's and all of Training Camp to actually pay attention and see that mcclain was starting in front of Thornton can't do that is beyond me.

and acting like we gave thornton suh money is also silly. He is a role player who will have his moments here.
