I am sure they'll get something done, but not a major deal IMO.

I think I read that the franchise number for safeties is only $4.1 million.

I'm sure this will rile some people up, but I don't think Roy deserves a massive deal and if he left, I don't think it'd be as drastic as some think.

Pay him a fair salary that is in the top 5 range for safeties and be done with it. Or franchise him if he wants more.

If it were me, I'd wait until the season is over before I give him a new deal. Players seem to have their best years the year that their contract expires. I still think Roy's best year was his rookie year. It may be that he has been out of position before last year, but he needs to make more plays if we're gonna break the bank.

I think people have unrealistic expectations of Roy. I also think, that people don't appreciate exactly how good of a safety he actually.

He deserves a boatload of money, and it's not like we're ever in any type of salary cap trouble.

See,that is where I disagree.

I think he deserves to be paid, but not a "boatload" of money.

I think Cowboy fans also tend to overrate Roy.

ROy doesn't deserve to break the bank, imo. I would probably take the 10 top salaries at his position and give him whatever the average is. A top 5 salary would be too high. Don't get me wrong, I love Roy. He is no push over, but he's not as good as some make him out to be.

I think 4 ints a year and 4-6 sacks a year with a bunch of tackles isn't too much to ask. If he can do that this year, pay him like the best Safety, but I think he's been better than average, but not great. I think it has a lot to do with players around him, but thats the way it is.

I don't know what he should get paid, but I can't wait to see him play closer to the line of scrimmage if we can get a true free safety out of the boat of players we have trying out for it.

Re-signing Roy should be a priority because you just can't let impact type players leave the team in their prime.

Anyhow, we can't just wait on both Witten and Roy because I think we can only tag one of them.

roy williams is the ONLY cowboy who's jersey i owned by number and his name on the back (got witten and campbell but "iceberg" on the back) and i've got like 3 or 4 of 'em. i think roy is one of the top safeties in the league and deserves to be paid like junk says, in the top 5 and get it over with. i don't think he's the best and i don't think he commands the most at the position.

average of top 5 or 8 should be fine and keep him. just because he's not *the best* doesn't mean we're not damn fortunate to have him here.

I am sure a deal will get done. The fan backlash alone would prevent Jerry from letting him get away.

However, I don't think the loss of Roy would be as dramatic as some think it would be.

for all you people who say he is not a top5 STRONG SAFETY can you name 5 that are better and more consistant that roy williams?

ill start you off with some names that might get mentioned but just shouldnt:
1. Ed Reed - most over-rated S at the moment, he had an amazing year, dont get me wrong. the guy put up a great season and is a ballhawk. but he is a true FS and played on the best defense in football the year he did that.
2. Troy Polamalu (sp?) - this guy is definately a top5 SS, id put him right next to Williams either in front or behind. the thing is, he stepped into a defense that was top notch with the best LB corpse in the NFL and the rest of the defense is solid. this guy looks a lot like Roy when he plays . . .
3. Sean "Drive By" Taylor - another great player, but just doesnt deserve to be rated on the same level as Williams, he is definately a top10 talent and can lay down the law, but really he cant cover anything like Williams and doesnt hit nearly as hard or make nearly as many plays.
4. Rodney Harrison - he is past his prime, but he could lay down the law just like Williams can, stil lsay hes a top10-15 SS.
5. Lawyer Milloy - Way Over-rated, end of story he shouldnt even be mentioned in the same sentence as Williams.

so just rule out those 5 from being better than williams.

polamalu is the only acception, but he just has an amazing defense around him, something williams is going to have in this coming season or the next.

Roy is a playmaker and you keep your playmakers. The INT against the Eagles, the hit at the goalline against the Giants causing the fumble, and on and on. He has coverage woes but is the best run support safety in the league. Roy has been durable, productive, a leader, and sets a tone for the defense. Pay him. He was the first building block of this new defense.

We are Cowboy fans, so theres already a otn of bias on this issue, so I'm not going to debate this with you. I say I would wait until the end of the year to renew his contract. Players have their best years in contract years. He doesn't make a ton of game changing plays over a 16 game schedule. Make him earn the big pay day.
