What's wrong with Watkins?

I see all these threads about how we MUST have a FS or that Henry needs to move to FS. To that I say, what's wrong with Watkins? He's a drafted FS with upside who after a rocky start has shown some decent flashes at the end of the year.

It seems kind of silly to go ahead and give up on him and move one of our high-priced CBs to FS when we very well might already have one. I guess we'll see how it all shakes out in training camp...7 months from now.

i love Watkins but i think he's still too raw and is a couple of years away till he becomes a real good player.

i think pat watkins could be one hell of a free safety for the dallas cowboys.

Patrick is raw, it wouldn't be a bad idea to bring in a mid-level FA for the position, we can't just rely on hoping Pat Watkins gets it

but I believe he will get in the next couple of year, but not so sure about this coming year, we can't take that chance though

I like watkins and unless I can get a guarantee that a rookie would be much better than a 2nd year watkins at FS, no way do draft one. I would draft a CB with my #1 ,, not a FS.

I don't like Henry @ FS, but I am on board with our very first pick being a corner. Maybe someone like Hughes, or Hall.

ah the stupidity is something to behold. Of cours Henry is fast enough to be a FS. He did very well his rookie year playing FS- got 10 picks. But some here just hate for no reason at all.

I like Watkins....if you recall most of those deep TD's he was beat early in the season we're only because he didn't locate the ball.....at least he was in position.
He seems to be very strong versus the run and didn't seem to get beat deep much late in the season.

I don't think there's an issue with Watkins, mainly because they wouldn't have started him at the end of the season (and he played pretty well) if they didn't think he had upside.

But here's why there's talk about Henry at FS.

1. You don't want to rely on your second year player to solidify a spot. There's a reason why it's called a sophomore slump.

2. Henry turns 30 next season, which is up there in age for a CB. For a guy his size and age, the natural progression is to go from CB to FS.

3. I they want to move around Roy more like Polamalu and others, they'll needs another safety. So if they go to the nickel package and put Roy at an LB spot in the nickel, they'll need Watkins and another safety to play the safety spots in the nickel. It would make no real sense to get a Keith Davis type to play the SS spot in the nickel since it's a coverage defensive scheme. So by getting another FS type, you can have Watkins and the new FS plays the safety spots in the nickel while Roy plays the LB spot.


It should be noted that in training camp they experimented with Roy at LB in the nickel package, but I'm guessing they didn't feel confident in the other safeties....and rightfully so.
