MJ's live performances are very hard to fetch. But when you find them, they're greatness. He gives it his all, whereas his full-set performances took a lot out of him, and it was less crisp from the technical wizard. There are a ton of full-set videos, but his live, single-set performances are like finding a gold nugget in a dry river bed. He didn't like doing them, they were daunting to him.

My three favorite live MJ performances:

(The obvious, pure art, all-time best act) Motown 1983

Grammy Awards 1988

Super Bowl 1993

This gem is so unworldly fantastic. There's a version that I can't damned find, that has his shirt change colors, the way it was originally aired. I read the LA Times review, and, even then, while he didn't win anything in 88 for Bad (he was ROBBED), they knew they just saw something extraordinary

You know who were the studio musicians were that helped him record several of the albums? Believe it or not..Toto..Steve Lukathur..

Im a big fan of their stuff way back. Lukathur, Paitch, and Pocaro (Rip) way ahead of their time musically..

I don't know much about the background stuff. I know that female guitarist was with him from Thriller to Bad to Dangerous and beyond. I know he had a ton of collaborators, a lot very loyal to him, but not the specifics.

I'm, admittedly, still discovering him. Just started my MJ fix this past January, amigo. But I'm enveloping, submerging myself into his music. I'm learning all I can.

Thanks for this post.

Also, thanks for Hot Streak. Really fun song, brotherman

For all Lennon-ites and Cavett fans and audiophiles and The Beatles fans, this is must see. It's over an hour. If you haven't seen this and love Lennon or Cavett, this is a gem. I've posted it in here once or twice. I get drunk and watch this whole interview once or twice a year

Cavett get the best or wierdest out of everybody..lol

THAT producer that helped him Quincy Jones brought them in i believe..

JUST for some old memories one they barely played off the album, they really won the Grammys for..Six of em..

Jennifer Batten is the guitarist I'm speaking of, Billy. MJ's lead guitarist through almost all of his important tours and shows

I really, really like Weezer's new rendition of "Africa"

Weezer is the ish. Grew up to this band. The Blue Album is essential listening.

I am sorry, with all due respect, I just cant watch people dance to MJ when I can watch MJ dance to MJ. I literally get depressed that I'm not watching Michael do it.

The master.

Reality mentioned this video in a separate thread. This is pure pop perfection. Just absolute sublime perfection. It holds up to anything top-40 in the last 25 years (and, imo, crushes them all). The best pop song I have heard/seen since the 80s, I think. Certainly the video is at the top. The track is up there, too.

This video is so The Warriors (1979 film). And MJ in the hipster piano shirt, as he lays on his bed and tells of his story.

It's insane. I feel like I'm there with him as he chills on his bed, in his small, box room, screaming to the world, telling his story. Then he can't take it any more and boogies out for action. Incredible.

And the guitar riff and melody is insane hook-driven overdose.
