When do we start to worry about our DB's?

Ok, most of us are worried right now, but what is the deal? Yes, Newman is hurt again with another groin pull, but what is up with Jenkins? A stinger is keeping him out this long?

Neither player has had any time in camp, and specifically to learn Rob's defense. It's just crazy to me that they are both going to come in week one and hold up there end of the bargain! This isn't an over reaction thread with the opener still weeks away, but these guys need the work. If they don't come back to 2009 form we can kiss a good season goodbye.

Ok, that feels better..I got that off my chest. I can tell you one thing, left guard, RDE, or our third WR doesn't even concern me like our two starting DB's do right now.

Let's assume the time to worry is now.....What exactly do you suggest we fans do about it?

And for the record, I'm more excited than concerned.

This is just par for the course.

Did you really think we'd get through training camp and four preseason games without injury to any of the critical top 30 or so players we expect to start and fill key rotational/reserve roles?

Lots to be excited about. From what I've read/seen, we have been getting encouraging play/signs from Elam, Coleman, Brent, McCann, Costa, Nagy, Arkin and Smith.

That makes me feel good since S, OL and DL were the top worry spots coming into camp.

Bottom line is we've not had one season ending injury or even real bad long term injury. KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK!

Jenkins will bounce back this year and Newman will be solid of not back to his pro bowl form. I think the secondary last year was bad because the attitude and atmosphere was bad in Dallas. Garrett and Ryan will not put up with the bad attitudes and lack of effort. I expect to see everyone bring their best effort to each game and the secondary play well, if not great. Sure, we could be stronger at safety, but I expect our corners to do well. Watch Scandrick this season. I think he puts in a very good year.

There is nothing we can do actually. I just picked a topic that was bothering me for a while. The left guard turnstile topic was worn out so I picked this one.

I was told Newman's injury issues were myth.

He'll probably come back and play 16 games hobbled so then it's a myth.

DITTO or I started woring when D Woodsen retired.

Not sure how whoring will solve anything. But way to take one, or ten, for the team. :D

I do find it interesting that we hear alot of positive daily progress from positions that are needy (S, OL, DL), yet almost nothing from other positions near as often.

Just a proposal, think they know what our areas of concern are, and spin them. Sorry, I just remember Alan Ball last year.

Exactly, and then the subsequent go-to alibi if plays poorly will be "he was playing injured!"

nobody is talking about Sensabaugh....he is the WEAKEST link on this defense, period. he will not be resigned and there will be threads later this year about how bad he is. mark my words. im happy with our CB position for the most part.

That's a great point. It just seems ok that both starting DB's are not out there right now. From the media's perspective and the team's perspective. What if both Free and Smith were out for TC?

we've had about a dozen practices without the starters--give it some time:bang2:

Yeah, I just know its something that is present, if your marketing the team right as Jerry is a master of doing. Now it would be a bigger deal if they were youngsters, but TNew and Jenkins have been here for a while so they aren't missing as much by not practicing.

Only thing about them not being there is it does make us as fans wonder if they will be better than last year, cause we haven't seen them. All we can do is wait and see.

Jenkins would have probably played the next week during the regular season, they are just being overly cautious with all these injuries since it's the off season.

Exactly right. Why risk aggravating an existing injury into a lasting one during the early portion of the preseason? Our starting corners are what they are and that should be good enough to satisfy our needs. But if injuries begin to add up, THAT is when we should push the panic button.

For now, I am somewhat comfortable, if not exactly overly confident. Ryan's style of defense "should" help all of the DBs look a bit better than they did last season. I know that Buddy's DBs never had to maintain coverage for more than a blink of the eye. At least that is the way that I remember it. :p:

Let the youngsters get the time... they need it and the top two need the rest.

I started worrying when Kevin Smith injured his achilles and haven't stopped since.

I thought we really needed secondary help even in last year's draft. Newman is 54 next season, Scandrick is up for a new contract and will likely be looking for a starting gig. It would have been nice to start developing a premium talent.

You were? By who?

He can't separate the idea that Newman plays hurt from the idea that he's also our best CB, regardless. It's easier to just stay confused than to have to sort it all out.

To the OP, we need to be looking carefully for an NFL-quality player at CB after cut-downs. And that will be tough because there are teams like the Giants with bigger needs at the position than we've got.

I think CB is a bigger position for concern than either OG or WR3. And it's not a position where you can plug in a capable starter mid-season if someone goes down, either. As it stands, we'd be stuck with Ball getting significant playing time and hoping Thomas can come on in the dime packages. Let's hope for some manufactured pass rush.
