Yep, Looney was capable but Fredbeard is way more than capable. Flemming was capable but Tyron is way more than capable. It's good to have capable backups but expect a decrease in productivity. I always do when I bring in a back up. Concerns, I have a few. Tackle being the biggest on the O-line. I think we can expect more MIA from Tyron. No point in talking about Williams at tackle because there is no talking at the office yet.

So where are we today, January 21? Tyron still has a back, Flemming is a FA and after that the cupboard is bare. Collins a FA in 2020. Again, no assumptions that Williams will get moved to T. Go all in on Flemming and sign him? Nope, he's only capable and some team will overpay capable as a starter.

That leaves us with a pool of FA T's and usually that pool is a wading pool, not an Olympic sized real pool. Sometimes it's a Dead Pool. Loved that movie. Who is in that pool? Any sharks, or just minnows? Draft a T in the 3'rd or 4'th round? Blasphemer! We need a DT, S, TE, WR!

Tell ya what, watch what this team does in FA, the positions they fill and you will know where we're headed in the draft. Don't believe me? Go back 1 year, 3 years, 5 years, and take a look at the positions filled in FA and positions targeted in the draft. Want to build a draft board by position? Wait until FA is over you will know exactly where to start. Then pick a name to fill the position.

I could ramble on about FA choices by position showing which positions we will draft but nah, that would be a rant not a ramble and Jimbob don't rant. Thoughts, comments, whines, moans, gripes? Y'all know what I'm sayin right

Trade Collins to get back in the first round. He doesn't want to play on the inside of the line. His contract is up after this season. Get some value and draft a swing Tackle with talent and get ready to replace Smith.

So you're moving in to the first round to draft a T to replace Collins. Ok. Then a swing T later to eventually replace Smith I assume. Let's see if we draft a FA T, that will tell us if T is on the radar. FA signees and inteviewees always tell what these cats are thinking. They sign mid- low level FA's and draft the same position to cover their butts

First round pick is a stretch but ti get a 2-4 round pick for Collins will help.

I don't know why someone would overpay Fleming's "capable" as a starter this year if they didn't last year. He got much more meaningful playing time with NE in 2017 than he did with Dallas in 2018, and even started the Super Bowl game against Philly. Of course, Fleming can sign anywhere he wants, as long as a team want's him, so regardless of pay he may want to look at a team that would give him a better chance to be a starter than Dallas would. We certainly shouldn't go "all in" on Flemming, because he will never be good enough to be a full time starter, but if we can get him on another 1 year deal, or maybe 2, it buys us some time to address the OT position longer term. We may still want to draft someone at OT, and Flemming could hold down the backup job while the rookie develops.

I'm sure you are right that what the team does in free agency will give some insight into what they plan to address in the draft.

Yes I agree with you on Flemming. Hopefully we sign him to an inexpensive 2 year deal. Good point on why any team would pay him as a starter when they didn't last year. If he's signed then we probably only need a swing tackle with some upside in the draft. Flemming becomes the FA.

The positions targeted in FA have become our draft targets often over the past 5 years. It's like we target the mid to low range FA and cover out butts in the draft with the same positions. Better for cap purposes yes, long term especially. Short term??

I thought Tyron's back looked better this year than last. Maybe he's getting over the hump on it.

Though you pooh pooh it, I think Williams at swing T is likely. We've got SuaFilo, Looney, and Ehinger all under contract and able to compete for LG.

I’d try to keep Fleming
He’s a good swing
I think OT is a big need but I’m not trading my RT for a 2-3 and pray I can get a starter quality player there
I draft a guy who I think can develope and hope he’s ready by next year because if he’s not then I’m drafting a first rnd tackle next year

Based on his play the last few years, who would give you anything close to that for Collins?

You have a player there in connor williams at RT. just got to find a guard

I have a question:

Is this topic specifically addressed to just the offensive line?

if this is the case OG are pretty much every lineman in he draft. If anything you do not see a lot of pure interior lineman in the draft most of the lineman that come from college now seem to be either OC or OTs and if you are not a highly rate player at those positions you get turned into a guard.
