Before the draft, when looking at how things might fall, it seemed to me that there was a chance that one of the top three WR’s would Fall to 17. I wrote in a thread somewhere on here that if one of Lamb, Jeudy, or Ruggs III fell to our pick, I just didn’t see how any of the defenders left would be even close to how those 3 WR’s were graded.
I did know the team needed defense more, but I rated the 3 wideouts so highly that they’d be far and away the BPA unless Henderson or Kinlaw fell (full disclosure, I didn’t like Henderson a lot but Kinlaw was a guy that I really liked).
Going into the draft I figured Terrell, Diggs, Chaisson, Delpit, and McKinney would be there at 17, but all of those guys are at least a couple of tiers below all three WR’s. Of those names, I figured that Chaisson was the one that I’d want to draft (I liked him a lot)... but not nearly as much as Lamb/Jeudy/Ruggs.
Leading up to the draft, nearly every time I would play out the first round, I ended up with one of the big 3 WR’s available at 17... so I wasn’t really surprised to see one of them still there, but what did shock me was that the one sitting there was Lamb. I didn’t think there was any way he’d make it to Dallas’ pick. I had him easily the best wideout in what was a historically deep WR class. I knew a couple at least would go in the first 16 with possibly the third there for Dallas... but that guy being Lamb never entered into my mind.
I thought Lamb was the best wideout to come out of the draft since, probably Amari Cooper... and truth be known, I probably liked Lamb better than Coop when they were both coming into the league, so I’m not sure how far back you’d need to go to find a WR that I ranked as highly as CeeDee.
So, needless to say, Lamb was the clear, easy pick to me and I was beyond thrilled when the Commish called out his name. However, I wasn’t sure that Dallas would feel the same way that I did about Lamb, and I was concerned that they might take Chaisson because of the defensive need and how highly they rank the DE position.
To answer the question though, I expected Lamb to be the pick because he was the BPA by a good stretch and both McClay and Stephen both like to stick to their boards... and before the draft, it sounded like McCarthy had a similar outlook.
I still wasn’t sure though and because of how much I wanted Dallas to draft Lamb, I was sweating bullets.
When they called out his name, I was more excited about that pick Than I’ve been in a long, long time.
