Serious question: When was the last time an NFL team with a losing record, made a mid-season trade for a WR and that team ended up making the playoffs?

Without a ton of research, I remember two big WR trades of the last decade (besides the Roy Williams debacle) that didn’t work out, but both were made by winning teams.

1. The Patriots traded Randy Moss to Minn in 2010 for a third and a seventh rounder.
This was when Favre needed a deep threat when he was in Minn. Moss ended up only catching 13 passes the rest of the season and clashed with HC Brad Childress. The trade was a failure and Childress ended up getting fired.

2. Again the pats traded WR Deion Branch to Sea in 2006 for a first round pick. The pats get a first rounder for Branch who had starred in NE but bombed in Sea. His best year was 2007 where he had just over 600 yards receiving.

Interestingly, both of these trading teams had a winning record, and neither trade worked out.

Can anyone think of or find a War trade in the last 10 years that made a huge difference for a team? I can’t think of a single one.

The trade for Amari Cooper with go down a legendary. Maybe biblical.

BRANDON MARSHALL had success.
TONY GONZALEZ had a good run with the Falcons
RANDY MOSS to the Pats was pretty good.
TO to the Eagles

@ Bobhaze "Well that can go either way...which are you predicting? Good biblical or bad biblical?"

The Good would be for the Cowboys to spark the offense to match the defensive output ans take the Cowboys deep into the playoffs.

The Bad would for the team continue down the path of losing which would cause the Cowboys to release the Head Coach and OC.

The part that discust me about our current record is that the defense is playing at an elite level. The best in decades, now the offense is suffering without Witten and Dez.

I would like to see Garrett correct his error in releasing Dez and bring back the redzone threat. He wants a one year deal and that would be perfect for the Cowboys as well. The 3 TE sets are not working and I want to see the field spread with 4 WRs.

My memory is cloudy, but I remember when a really really smart GM made a trade with the Lions for Roy Williams during the season.

That worked out great.

There has to be a first time for everything. It might as well be us. Heaven knows we're due.

..well Bob, they say there's a first for everything. All we can do is hope.

No.

We are not due until the terms on the contract Jerry Jones signed with the Devil to win a Super Bowl title with Switzer as his head coach are satisfied.

I have no idea when that may occur. Only Jerry Jones and the Unholy know the answer.

And I bet if you asked him, Jerry Jones doesn't know either.

If only JJ had included Stephen as part of the Devil's due.

Usually it involves the unborn. To my knowledge, Jerry Jones has not fathered a legitimate child since our last world championship.

Brandin Cooks had a good year in NE and seems to be working out well in LA (on Pace for 1300 yards)

Probably the best wide receiver trade I can remember was the Patriots picking up Wes Welker from the Dolphins

Guy averaged over 100 catches a year the first three years after that trade, something like that

That paid off huge for NE

None-the-less your point is accurate Bobhaze

Big Time wide receiver trades generally flop more than they succeed

Good to know. I have no idea how that works. It could come in handy if I ever decide to visit the crossroads in Mississippi.

The error in releasing Dez? Ha ha ha ha. Such the jokester!

31 other teams agree Dez sucks. He still has no job, even though teams are obviously looking for receiving help and Dez would cost zero in draft pick compensation and would be CHEAP by now.

A. Cooper, D. Thomas, G. Tate and zero interest in Dez. Wake up and smell the coffee.

I don't think those teams started the season with as bad receiving corps as Dallas had prior to Cooper. Dallas probably needed to do that after parting ways with Dez. The Cooper trade had more to do with the regret of letting the team start the season limping because of the huge lack of a #1 and even a #2 receiver.

It is not the same situation at all with when the Roy Williams trade was done in 2008.

1) Roy Williams was older. (Compared to Cooper)
2) That time Dallas gave up too much for a guy who was to play in a squad which had Terrell Owens, too.
3) Detroit had some quality WRs when they let Roy Williams leave.

In Coopers' situation, he was let go because of a rebuild plan, just like the other great players the Raiders have parted ways with.

Cooper is pretty young, probably a year or two older than a WR you will pick in a draft. But Cooper brings in experience and proved high talent.

Everything aside, Dallas DID NEED a wr. They had simply NO ONE, which made it very hard for not only the QB but also Zeke and the OL all the way.

How effective he will be for the team still remains to be seen. But thats for certain that a 1st round pick was a compensation not only for Cooper but for Jerry's inability in the offseason as well.

The Welker example is a good one, although NE did not have a losing record when they made the trade because I’m pretty sure it was made in the offseason. As was the Brandin Cooks situation.

My question centers on midseason WR trades. Can’t see much history that says they work.

No disrespect to you RJ, but I could see this being an exact quote inside Jerry’s office the day of the trade. “It might as well be us” and “Heaven knows we’re due” is almost exactly how this pitiful GM has run this team. Make moves and hope for the best.

They basically don't.

Of course, teams that still have major needs during the year are generally not the ones who are competing for super bowls.

Was Percy Harvin midseason?
