When was the last time this worked?

They basically don't.

Of course, teams that still have major needs during the year are generally not the ones who are competing for super bowls.

Was Percy Harvin midseason?
Yep. The Percy Harvin trade the jets made with sea to get Hardin was Oct, 2014. Harvin was a bust for the jets.

Btw, the jets got him for a 4th and 6th rounder.

The Welker example is a good one, although NE did not have a losing record when they made the trade because I’m pretty sure it was made in the offseason. As was the Brandin Cooks situation.

My question centers on midseason WR trades. Can’t see much history that says they work.

Can't disagree

As a general rule using a high profile WR acquisition to resurrect a team seems to be a losing proposition

The trade for Amari Cooper with go down a legendary. Maybe biblical.

BRANDON MARSHALL had success.
TONY GONZALEZ had a good run with the Falcons
RANDY MOSS to the Pats was pretty good.
TO to the Eagles

@ Bobhaze "Well that can go either way...which are you predicting? Good biblical or bad biblical?"

The Good would be for the Cowboys to spark the offense to match the defensive output ans take the Cowboys deep into the playoffs.

The Bad would for the team continue down the path of losing which would cause the Cowboys to release the Head Coach and OC.

The part that discust me about our current record is that the defense is playing at an elite level. The best in decades, now the offense is suffering without Witten and Dez.

I would like to see Garrett correct his error in releasing Dez and bring back the redzone threat. He wants a one year deal and that would be perfect for the Cowboys as well. The 3 TE sets are not working and I want to see the field spread with 4 WRs.

These guys weren’t midseason trades. Again...MIDSEASON WR trades.

I meant when SEA got him and he was big in their super bowl run. I think he was an offseason acquisition, though.

I am stuck on Garrett and Linehan. I have zero faith in those 2 morons. If we started next season with David Shaw as HC and Cooper and Gallup, you would be pretty happy.
David Shaw would be the exact same thing as now. I formation extraordinaire.

Yeah, my question was based on midseason trades. I think Sea originally got Harvin in the offseason from Minn if memory serves me.

And that’s the the key. There are some good trades in the offseason with WRs. Wes Welker was a good example brought up earlier. And when the pats got Moss from Minn originally, it was in the offseason. I just can’t find midseason WR trades that have worked.

No disrespect to you RJ, but I could see this being an exact quote inside Jerry’s office the day of the trade. “It might as well be us” and “Heaven knows we’re due” is almost exactly how this pitiful GM has run this team. Make moves and hope for the best.

Even the Bowery Boys got one right now and then.

And how many of those previous trades had the approval of Will McClay?

Close up this thread.

Serious question: When was the last time an NFL team with a losing record, made a mid-season trade for a WR and that team ended up making the playoffs?

Without a ton of research, I remember two big WR trades of the last decade (besides the Roy Williams debacle) that didn’t work out, but both were made by winning teams.

1. The Patriots traded Randy Moss to Minn in 2010 for a third and a seventh rounder.
This was when Favre needed a deep threat when he was in Minn. Moss ended up only catching 13 passes the rest of the season and clashed with HC Brad Childress. The trade was a failure and Childress ended up getting fired.

2. Again the pats traded WR Deion Branch to Sea in 2006 for a first round pick. The pats get a first rounder for Branch who had starred in NE but bombed in Sea. His best year was 2007 where he had just over 600 yards receiving.

Interestingly, both of these trading teams had a winning record, and neither trade worked out.

Can anyone think of or find a War trade in the last 10 years that made a huge difference for a team? I can’t think of a single one.
Of course..

your common denominator is Tom Brady and his coach.

Not Jason and his patchwork staff and aging Romo for QB

So I do not see hanging success or failure on a single event like a trade for WR.

I think most are looking at this as a deal for this year - to go all in with the expectation it can help us win it all this year. I don't think that's the case at all. Sure I think the Cowboys are expecting a boost to the offense this year that will improve their chances to get to the playoffs, but I think this is also a long term move. I think the Cowboys see a 24 year old receiver that can help them for years to come. Obviously that will necessitate a contract extension, but I don't think they would have made the same deal for an older receiver.

probably not much history because most smart teams dont do it mid season, they do it before a season starts.
only jones boys would do it at 3-4.
They are looking at a TE too, so they have changed their minds since PS when they liked their guys lol

A lot going on with this trade.

If the Dak/AC chemistry doesn’t develop quickly (like, say, by the middle of the Titans game :^), fans and media will begin calling the trade a bust.

If, gawd forbid, this happens, the next question will be: is the “failure” on Dak, on AC, or is it on Garrett/Linehan for not being creative enough scheming for the Dak/AC partnership? Or will it be blamed on some combo of the three?

One thing’s for sure...if this trade doesn’t work, we finish poorly and Oakland ends up with a top-ten pick next April, this forum will become a most evil place.

As it should.

Desperation trades have ruined this team for decades. This appears to be yet another one.

Don't forget a 5th for Cassell. Yeah, it was just a 5th, but it was a thrown away 5th. Everyone already knew Cassell blows.
