The reason I say this is because I feel that Phillips can be a very good tight end. I know what little I have seen of him he looks like a good player. Maybe he just needs some playing time to break out like Miles did? I know some don't see much in him but others do. I think he has alot of talent and should be playing more. I always said he was alot better than Marty B but others disagreed. What do you think?

I liked him better than Bennett before he blew out his knee. Hopefully he breaks out this year.

I think Phillips is a role player not a legit starting TE. Not trying to knock him, I like him and I like his work ethic but I don't see him taking a lead role in this offense

Yeah, i hated to see him get hurt and then basically have to start all over. Hopefully he will see more playing time this year. I like the guy.

You never know....

He'll break out just in time to get a big contract from another team.

he is going to be good, but not great. he does have a little of witten in him, but he is not quite as athletic. he is a football player though. his blocking is not as good as bennett, but his attitude and his catching is going to be better and he is already a fan favorite. so he can do no wrong.

True. I hope the best for him. However I don't see great blocking ability in Phillips and does not look as smooth as a Witten in the passing game. Again not a knock on Phillips. If he can go out there and put up 20 or 25 catches on the season as a 2nd TE then I would consider that a pretty good season for him. I don't see a pro bowl type player in Phillips but I do see a guy who can be a solid contributor to the team. Not every guy is going to be a star player but it is important to have role players who go out and help their teams win ball games.

We don't need Phillips to "break out." We need him to contribute.

+1

Phillips has the right attitude, if not the natural skillset Bennett had/has. I'll take JP's head for the game, his level of skills, and his "want to" over the combo of skills & attitude Marty B displayed with Dallas, every time. EVERY time.

He's a backup TE. What exactly is 'breaking out'? His job is just to contribute.

They say that ACL'S usually take a full year to heal and get back up to full strength. I don't think he had a role last year in the offense. MB was a better point of attack blocker than Phillips so clearly JG had more use for Marty in the offense. If Phillips can improve his inline blocking he should see more time on the field.

NEVER! I wish he would atleast contribute and help us out though. 3-4 TD's and 300-400 yds would be nice.

bingo. on this team the second TE is probably the 5th or 6th recieving option, which means they are the probably going to get about 20% chance of being the 3rd option and most often they will be the 4th option. and lots of plays not even involved. its expectations.

although I didn't care much for bennett's attitude, his production in years past was in line with expectations for a back up TE. great blocker. makes 15-25 catches. he clearly quit on this team last year, specially as a pass catcher and that's why Romo didn't trust him. bennett was very unmotivated route runner. he didn't embrace his role withe the team in that aspect.

perhaps with the giants, becoming the primary TE, might motivate him to be sharper. but then again.

Not sure that a second TE ever really breaks out, but I am betting that he catches more balls than Bennett did. I think he is going to contribute and have Romo's trust, and that is really all I care about.

I totally don't buy this. He tore his ACL in pre-season. Guys often come back from that in 9 months. He had over a year. What we are seeing is a guy who is what he is, a 3rd TE. That isn't to say he won't be our #2 this year - but we can't expect a ton out of him.

Me, I think the TE position is very much our least settled spot. We targeted a TE in free agency and came up empty. Yes, we used a late round pick on one but Hannah is hardly a lock to make the team

He needs to be better at his blocking. Maybe he decent at that, but was not used in those situations as much. Because we had Bennett.

I am not sure, I am going going on what I remember from reading. But a few beers could have fogged that memory...:laugh2:

I think Hos hit it right on the button. Phillips just needs to contribute in his assigned role.

Agreed, I don't think he'll break out. But I expect him to be solid and at-least reliable when the ball does come his way.
