When will we know?

When Bobhaze, Couchcoach, and
When will we know this team has turned a corner? When will we know what kind of team this one is?
I’ve said many times, two games is not nearly enough evidence to know what we have with this team. Especially with a ton of new faces to blend into the chemistry.

So....When will will know what we are? These are some signs I think we will see:
  • When we see Consistency on both sides of the ball- when we know what both the offense and the defense are going to be able to impose their will consistently. It’s only been two games, and that Carolina game had the feel of a preseason game because of the rustiness of the offense.
  • When the receivers start clicking with Dak- there are at least 4 new faces in this “WR by committee” bunch and they haven’t yet figured out how they are going to mesh with Dak. It takes time- especially when you don’t play any in preseason as a team.
  • When the defense shows it can shut down a great offense- we haven’t exactly played the cream of the offensive teams yet. But the D has looked very good, especially with pressure. But I want to see how our D stacks up against really good offenses like Atl, New O, and Filly. Stopping 80 year old Eli Manning is one thing. Let’s see how we do with some real QBs.
  • When our kicker proves trustworthy- anyone here ready to pronounce absolute faith in Brett Maher? I won’t until I see him show some consistency, especially under pressure. Like making a game winning FG. The margin between winning and losing in the NFL is paper thin every week. Look at how many games early in the season have been decided by a kicker.
  • When the HC shows he can make adjustments to what other teams will do- last year, one of the biggest frustrations I had was watching this HC and his staff continue with the same game plan week after week, even when it was obvious the league had figured out how to stop the 2016 blueprint. IMO, it remains to be seen if this coach is capable of making adjustments in game or in season.
We have seen 1/8 of the season. But if we can start seeing some of the bulleted items above, I will be more comfortable to say what this team is and what it can ultimately be.

Thoughts?

Good points, Bob. I agree with Ksk. If you have beasts in the trenches, you don't need to adjust as much as opponents need to adjust to you.

The unknown is what makes sports exciting.

------Only when I hear Jerry say to Garrett "you're fired" will I know for certain that the team / franchise has turned a corner.

Late candidate for post of the week

We should probably wait until the end of the season to properly evaluate these subjects .

Anything before the final results would be premature.

I'm not especially certain that there is a set formula for knowing we have a winner.

I surely think it would help if we had both a consistently good offense and defense.
Signs I watch for to determine super bowl contention:

1) At least decent QB play w/ very few TO's.
2) LOS domination. It is just so hard to win against playoff teams/QB's if you're getting beat up front. Foles does not win that super bowl against the Pats if the Pats had a better DFront. He had all day. And you need to be at least decent on both sides of the ball. Thing is, a dominant DLine is what mostly beats playoff Qb's. Brady laughs at teams who try to beat him w/ coverage. Pay attention next time and see the snarky smirk on his face when others try to beat him w/ coverage.
3) An O that can control the clock. Quick strike O's mostly lose to teams in the playoffs as their D gets gassed. ATL is the most recent example of this, though there were most definitely other factors. Brady does it w/ a short passing game, most teams do it w/ a consistent running game. Either way, gotta be able to use up clock to keep the D fresh.
4) S's. Man, your last line of D is just so important. Need a guy back there who can fly, cut off the deep stuff, and w/ the instincts to know where to be.
5) Playmakers. And that's on O and on D. Need some game changers. That's why I was happy w/ the Tavon acquisition. He's the guy that touches the ball 2-8 times/game, but makes a difference. I'm hoping Jaylon can be that guy on D. He's shown signs, and man can that guy fly!!!

I know, there are many other factors, and the more weaknesses you have the harder it is to win it all. However, it all starts up front.

In about another 4 to 5 years. Need a few more top draft picks and of course, a new coaching staff. The staff we have now won't take this team to the promised land. We're heading into a full decade of nothing's with Garrett & Company.

Well said K. The LOS domination is the most underrated part of putting together a winner. Sure would love to see some S talent and some more playmakers on both sides of the ball.

That's a darn good question

Assessment will be a lot more accurate at that time, that's for sure. I'm thinking the Philly game on 11/11 will tell a ton.
With the slow start we had thank God we don't play them and tell them but you're right that will be the test I think the Eagles can be beat we've seen it every game so far this year
