When Will We Start Seeing Cuts?

I've always marveled at the excitement people have over someone potentially getting fired/losing their jobs in this business.

Then again, I've always been disgusted at the use of the term "garbage" when referring to a player that isn't very good but is otherwise still a decent human being.

We can cut a veteran anytime and just designate them as a June 1 cut.

I did not know it could work that way. When did that become a rule?

so if newman made 8 million and played like garbage and should be fired we should just ignore it?

OK, i wont point that out :)

Yeah, poor Newman and his millions. What will he do now that he lost his job? Being set for life will be so hard on him. Poor fella....

Adam, is our CAP expert, so perhaps he can clear this point up for us?

As I understand it, June 1st and any CAP penalties become due that season. You CANNOT release a player at any time and then just say, let's pretend it is a June 2nd cut. It doesn't work that way... It is only June 2 or after that the penalty can be spread over two seasons. So a "June 1st" release, has no bearing on how the pro-rated bonus counts against your current CAP, and really, no bearing on what we were discussing.

The original question was; "Will we wait to release Newman until June 2nd so that the CAP penalty is halved for the current season?"

played good for years and fell off the cliff this year. So really nothing for anyone to cry about. he does have a rather large bank account; which is more then many do when they lose their job.

It is all about competition. These players have understood that from day one. It is a what have you done for me lately game that they play. Even the greatest understand that the difference between goo and great can be that extra step, that bit of anticipation to break on the ball as a DB, that uncanny agility that gets you around a stronger blocker, any of these can disappear with the turning of the calendar.

And on that day, you will be released. And before that day arrives, people will call for your head, coaches will doubt whether you still have it. It is the way of the game.

Don't feel sorry for the young millionaire who rides off into the sunset to enjoy a 50 year retirement. Don't condemn the fans, or the sport - The descriptions great, or garbage are used freely- and subject to change at a seasons notice. If I were Newman, I would say thank you and move on with what should be a great life for he and his family.
