Where is all the credit on drafting Ware?

If he was a bust....there would not be a day gone by in here were the organization wasnt blasted for drafting him. Lets be honest...a few months before that draft....Ware was seen as a middle to late first round pick and then skyrocketed up in weeks leading to draft day. Ireland and Parcells deserve a ton of credit for seeing the potential in this guy.

Didn't Parcells want Spears at 12 in that drafts and was over ruled ?

I think the in nfl circles Ware was always high on the board, its the media scouts that had him rising up the boards when they realized it.

The weeks up to the draft Parcells was actually wanting Spears at #11 over Ware/and Merriman, it was Jerry who overruled him on draft day because the scouts felt Spears was the most likely to fall to their second first rounder.

Now there are reports that Parcells preferred Merriman over Ware.

So maybe we should give the credit to Ireland and Jerry.

Taking Ware was such an easy decision even a caveman could do it.

Be more proud of the Ratliffe.

I heard pretty much the same thing.

The pick was a no brainer between Ware or Merriman.

Either way, you got a great pass rusher.

Props to seeing Ware had a better character and more versatility.

This was widely reported and after they drafted Ware Parcells did everything to try to move right back up to get Spears.

Mike Mayock of NFL Network had Ware as his #1 defensive player in the draft that year and praised him almost every night in the weeks leading up to the draft. So it's kind of hard to expect others to praise our scouts or Jerry for picking him at #11 when a lot of people loved the guy.

Still though...taking a guy from Troy St...one that you are going to changes positions with...that is foresight and balls.

Here it is...thanks for drafting Ware. Satisfied? Probably not, but that's ok, I'm sure this topic will rear its head several more times in the near future.

Parcells, Ireland, and even Jerry have recieved more than enough praise for doing their jobs. That era is over, and a new one begins. Parcells' contributions havent' gone completely unnoticed.

BP wanted a top pass rusher and a top DE for his 3-4. Pass rushers always go higher. BP might have hoped that Ware would slip under the radar and because he was a small college guy it certainly was possible. Merriman had let out hints he was thinking of dumping his agent and getting the condons- and both BP and JJ wanted no part of them. So I think Ware was always the choice. BP was worried that BB or someone else would grab Spears. BUT I think it was acknowldeged by draft day that Dallas had to use the earlier pick on Ware.

Considering the steroid prob with Merriman and the character Ware has who ever made the decision should be commended.

Ware and Merriman were both expected to be top 15 picks. You would be blind if you didn't see Ware's potential. As far as I'm concerned, credit shouldn't be given. He should have been expected. Potential is whats possible. He had already shown NFL ability before being drafted and that was all that was needed. His potential to get better is just pure bonus on top of already knowning he should be drafted.

Exaggerate much? In 12 NFL seasons, Haley had 10+ sacks in six of them. Their numbers are very similar at this point in their careers. There is no reason why Ware couldn't easily surpass Haley's production and then some.

Furthermore, when Haley played for the Cowboys, he only eclipsed 10 sacks twice (12.5, 10.5). I'm thinking that the majority of this board would be somewhat dissapointed in similar numbers by Ware this season.

...and no, I have nothing against Haley, as a matter of fact, he's one of my all-time favorites being a JMU grad and all.

As soon as Ware produces 23 sacks in 14 games like Martin did, I might agree with you. ;) He still leads the Cowboys all-time sacks with 118 and that was done in 10 years. (11.8 sacks a year avg)

I don't see any character flaws in Merriman. At least none that would concern me had we taken him. I see a very real, geniune guy, whenever I've heard him speak. He's not a punk. He's not a thug. Instead he's someone all of his teammates admire and respect, not to mention endorse wholeheartedly, and do so in the heat of fire.

So he had the supplement thing last year. I feel that team should have been more ontop of something like that. NFL players are literally under the microscope, how are they not under that same microscope concerning things they're putting in their bodies by the teams they play for? I don't see that happening in Dallas with our top line crews watching his every step.

And then his contract thing in the beginning. Blah, boo-hoo, so freakin what. He stepped right on the field and backed up his self-endorsements with astonishing play.

As of now I'd still rather have Merriman over Ware. No brainer. Ware has done basically zilch to live up to his hype. Though I am hoping this is the season we see what he's really made of with a new coach calling d. I'm just still not convinced that Wade Phillips is better at coaching a highly favored Bill Parcells player better than Bill himself. But time will tell......
