Exaggerate much? In 12 NFL seasons, Haley had 10+ sacks in six of them. Their numbers are very similar at this point in their careers. There is no reason why Ware couldn't easily surpass Haley's production and then some.

...and no, I have nothing against Haley, as a matter of fact, he's one of my all-time favorites being a JMU grad and all.

Haley didn't always get the sacks, but he probably the most disruptive pass rusher in the NFL in the early 90s. (including more disruptive than Reggie White) He rang up QB pressure like they were going out of style. A lot of the sacks by the Cowboys while he was playing was because he pressured the QB into other defenders.

And yes, he was highly favored by Bill. I don't care what facts about who bill may or may have not wanted leading up to the draft are. Fact is, Bill compared an unproven rookie to the greatest player he's ever coached. He doesn't do that very often, if ever. Probably didn't even give LT that much credit in the beginning. Couldn't have actually. LT is the bar.

SO time to live up to this hype. And for the record, what he has been doing so far IS NOT living up to that type of hype. Not even remotely close.

I think its too early to compare Ware & Haley because Ware is so early in his career.

But what nyc says about Haley is absolutely true. Haley's sack totals don't really tell the story of what a disruptive force his was on the Cowboy defense.

Ware might well be able to replicate that in time, but right now, I don't think he has done that. But its sounding like the 2007 season might be Haley-like for Ware. We shall see.

I like Ware but he has a long way to go before he is Haley or Martin's class.

Furthermore, when Haley played for the Cowboys, he only eclipsed 10 sacks twice (12.5, 10.5). I'm thinking that the majority of this board would be somewhat dissapointed in similar numbers by Ware this season.

at this point in ware's career and haley at his pinnacle...haley was far better. that's not an exaggeration. now, that's not to say ware won't improve and i highly doubt we've seen the best of ware, but i think carp's original statement is correct.

and cc's was just asinine. to declare ware our best pass rusher of all time, based off of 2 seasons of play? come on.

That's fine. You're entitled to your opinion. However, at some point stats have to become a basis for an argument one way or the other. The fact is, at this point in their careers (two years) Ware has 19.5 sacks to Haley's 18.5. You can claim Haley is a more disruptive force, and he may very well have been so, but Ware (as has been discussed ad nauseam) has been forced to play a role Haley never experienced...but that's another topic. If you think that Ware couldn't have been as disruptive as Haley given the same number of opportunities, then we'll have to disagree. Ware is on pace to becoming a better and more productive player than Haley. Too say he was "far" better IS an exaggeration.

That being said, I agree, to declare Ware the best pass rusher in Cowboys history is extremely premature. I never supported that argument, however, but thanks for including me in it.

At some point, all of these older ex-players have become cannonized into something that they really weren't at the time. If you think Haley wasn't criticized for his underwhelming 4 and 6 sack seasons with the Cowboys, then you need to refresh your memory. Again, I personally think Haley is an all-time great, he's just not infallible.

Thank goodness Jerry and Co. overruled on drafting Spears with the 11th pick, that would have been a major mistake!

I credit Jerry, BP and Ireland. The draft is not done by 1 man alone many opinions are listened to before the pick is made.

Either you didn't watch closely or you were too young to notice .......

Ware may become the best pass rusher we have had, but he ain't there yet.

BP wanted a top pass rusher and a top DE for his 3-4. Pass rushers always go higher. BP might have hoped that Ware would slip under the radar and because he was a small college guy it certainly was possible. Merriman had let out hints he was thinking of dumping his agent and getting the condons- and both BP and JJ wanted no part of them. So I think Ware was always the choice. BP was worried that BB or someone else would grab Spears. BUT I think it was acknowldeged by draft day that Dallas had to use the earlier pick on Ware.

Good post.

This deal about Parcells wanting Spears at No. 11 is overblown.

The bottom line is that the team - including Parcells - wanted BOTH Spears and Ware, it was just a matter of deciding which one had a better chance of falling to the later pick.
