For every position - churn, churn, churn
It's the off season - churn, churn, churn

Here is a look backwards at 2009's 53 man roster to end the season, and a look forward at 2010.

OFFENSE...25

QB...Romo, Kitna, & McGee

I don't think any of them are in jeopardy. Injury could change that. I would like to see us add a UDFA QB for the PS. I have my hopes on Matt Nichols. I think he has a Romo-like story in him.

RB...Barber, Jones, & Choice

I doubt there will be any movement here despite Choice's recent stated wishes. However, if an offer from another team hit the table it could happen.

FB...Anderson

I honestly do not know if he is safe or not after the gun charges. I think the Cowboys may seriously be considering drafting Dorin Dickerson to use as a FB, H-back, and TE all wrapped into one.

WR...Austin, Williams, Crayton, Hurd, & Ogletree

Jerry says he isn't looking for a WR. I don't believe that. But contrary to what so many want, it will not be Roy Williams. That just isn't going to happen at all. It won't be Austin either. He will be back. It will not shock me at all if Hurd is the odd man out.

TE...Witten, Bennett, & Phillips

No chance of a change here. Too deep.

OL...Adams, Kosier, Gurode, Davis, Columbo, Free, McQuistan, Holland, Preston, & Procter

The question here is how much is churned? 4 spots? 5? Could Flozell retire? What about Kosier? Both are nearer the end of their careers than the peak. Plus we have Brewster coming back and I think he is going to be like Free, a pleasant surprise. Despite the recent article by McMahon, 5 is too many to change. Adams stays. I think there are 4 open spots here, but maybe only 3. It will not shock me if Procter is safe. I know people do not want to hear that. I'm sorry. 3 spots are open.

Offense Summary...5 spots are open. Possibly 6. There is an outside shot at 7, but that is remote unless Adams or Kosier retire. I don't think either will, but I do think this is Adams' last season.

DEFENSE...24

DL...Spears, Ratliff, Olshansky, Hatcher, Siavii, & Bowen

Three of these 6 are Free Agents. I can't see us losing all 3. 2 is possible. 1 is more likely. There's a chance they all stay. I know people want Siavii upgraded, but I don't think he will be. There is too much to lose at DE to focus on NT depth.

LB...Spencer, James, Brooking, Ware, Butler, Carpenter, J. Williams, Johnson, & Octavien

There is change coming here too. The obvious first, Brandon Williams will be back and so too might Stephen Hodge. That is 2 spots. I think the obvious 2 who are gone are the last 2. As much as I like Cujo, he hasn't done enough to be comfortable, or part of the long range plans. It is interesting though that the Cowboys list him as an ILB. There is yearly speculation Carpenter is gone. As usual, that is silly. He is obviously trusted by Wade and the staff. Butler was the primary OLB backup on both sides, meaning Octavien is as good as gone now that B. Williams is back. I think this group only does those 2 changes.

DB...Newman, K. Hamlin, Sensabaugh, Jenkins, Scandrick, M. Hamlin, Ball, Watkins, & Gordon

All kinds of possibilities here. 2 of them (Watkins and Gordon) are probably gone. Is Ken Hamlin safe? Probably, despite what fans prefer. The exceptions may be if we do take a shot at Rolle or if we draft a S in round 1. Sensabaugh is a FA, but I think we will bring him back.

Defense Summary...Let's say we do lose only 1 from the DL. That is 5 spots open. 6 are possible, maybe even 7 if Hamlin is gone. I think that is unlikely, but will leave the window open.

SPECIAL TEAMS...4

Buehler, Suisham, McBriar, & LaDouceur

Suisham is gone. I doubt we carry 2 Kickers unless Buehler simply can't make PATS and FGs. Boniol was brought here to make sure he can. 1 roster change.

Overall Summary...5 on Offense. Anderson, Hurd, McQuistan, Holland, & Preston.

5 on Defense. Watkins, Gordon, Johnson, Octavien, and one of the backup DEs.

1 on Special Teams. Suisham.

There are your 11 roster spots. 3 of them are already filled by Brewster, Williams, and Hodge. That means anywhere from 0 to 2 Free Agents plus our original 6 Draft picks plus UDFAs. The Defense gets a spot back, I think it will belong to the DBs.

This is how I see it possibly going down as well. These are the places that I felt were the most likely to be shifted around and such.

I'd guess

1.) Sam Hurd (Ogletree has passed him for the 4th WR spot)
2.) Pat McQuistan
3.) Montrae Holland
4.) Corey Proctor
5.) Duke Preston
6.) Junior Siavii
7.) Curtis Johnson
8.) Steve Octavian
9.) Cletis Gordon
10.) Pat Watkins
11.) Shaun Suisam

I think 6 or 7 are a lock to be gone and maybe the whole list

I agree with this list. Hurd might be an exception though, depending on the draft. Hurd plays ST pretty good, and caught some balls throughout the year. If a WR is drafted in the early rounds, though, he is certainly expendable.

I don't think the Cowboys will keep Free on the bench. Could Flozell move to left guard?

Jerry Jones said the Cowboys will be making systematic changes to improve field position and maximize scoring. He expects as many as 10 or 11 new faces on the roster next season, with different contributors filling important roles, at upwards of 40 snaps a game. The emphasis, for the second season in a row, will be on competition for jobs.

could it be this group:
1) Montrae Holland
2) Duke Preston
3) Cory Procter
4) Ken Hamlin
5) Patrick Watkins
6) Shaun Suisham
7) Junior Siavii
8) Bobby Carpenter
9) Cletis Gordon
10) Steve Octavien

Good chance all them and Hurd will be gone as well they will not tender him since olgtree exploded on to the scene they will get a cheaper option to fill the 5th spot. Hurd is 5th on the depth chart and no way they are going to pay him the vet level to be the 5th best wr

How many players in the history of the NFL can you think of that started at LT for 10+ years and then moved to guard?

Of course they will tender him and take him to camp. The contract wouldn't be guaranteed until the season starts.

Player from the Practice Squad most likely to make the 2010 roster? Most might say Marcus Dixon. Some may say Connor Hughes if they believe we will keep 2 kickers.

I am going to tell you Travis Bright. They like him a lot. He has a nasty streak and is versatile. If anyone can replace Procter it is him. Hate to tell people but the team really likes Procter even if we don't.

I think Carpenter stays since he was our coverage linebacker;

However, I think Deon Anderson is gone, possibly sam hurd, i think he has hit his ceiling, now the cowboys might try to trade some of these players before the draft, and I think Mcquistan is gone too. Siavii might stay till after the draft etc, since he is the NT backup.

I'll keep it simple and be happy if Proctor is gone. Another year from Flo and a new guard would be really nice. I think Kosier is near the end...so is Flo, but talent level is vastly different.

If we draft a G/C then Proctor could be in trouble. I've always defended him as not being terrible. However, I don't see him ever being a starter. Time to look for his replacement. I expect to see him back as a swing guard and center.

K Hamlin is likely safe. It's Wade's defense and he likes him. If we draft a S the first two days then maybe. More likely Watkins is gone in that case. Ball is probably safe since he can play CB, spec packages, and S. Rolle could change all the dynamics.

I think Hurd will not be around if we draft a WR in the first few rounds.

Watkins is a great special teams guy, I would hate to lose him. But we need a leader on this squad who can lead the equally important special squad. This is why Choice isn't going anywhere. He just needs to know his role on this team. Where's the SHARK when you need him. :beer1:
