We're a third of the way through the 07 season & several of our players become FAs once the season is over. At this point which players are you inclined to keep? And which players are you inclined to let go? Don't worry we all reserve the right to change our mind at season's end. Remember we are about $12.5M under the cap.

I read somewhere that we must spend most of this money nlt then mid November for it to count against this year's cap. Realize I don't have a list detailing which Cowboys become FAs but most of us have a pretty good idea. Sorry if I've left anyone off.

KEEPERS:
Romo
Crayton (a good #3 but not #2 money)
Barber (becomes RFA; we keep by tendering him first round money or
re-sign him to new contract)
Colombo (signed 2 yr contract in spring, playing well, re-sign or
wait til 09 season over when he could chose leave for more money)
Newman (don't remember when his contract must be extended)

NOT SURE:
Hamlin (played badly against NE; may not be FS answer)
Reeves (pretty good #3 CB but not an everyday starter)

INCLINED TO LET GO:
Adams (reserve the right to change my mind several times)
Julius Jones
Nate Jones
Remi Ayodele (if Tank Johnson the future down the road)
TT (need real RB who can step in if starter(s) injuried/better return man)

POSITIONS WANT TO UPGRADE:
ILB - Ayodele (solid at best; if Burnett better he'd already be starting)
CB - both Newman/Henry have injury problems which could continue; need
young player who can step in as long-term starter
WR - TO turns 34; TGlenn 33; must be prepared at moment's notice for
one or both to get injuried.
RB - JJ's replacement
FS - Hamlin's replacement
DE - Spears/Canty good against the run, but no pass rush. Is that
good enough? Hatcher coming on; now making big plays.

depending on what Flo is looking for money wise, I'd try and keep him.

Adams (depends on money, otherwise he gets the franchise)

Reeves (depends on money) Crayton (depends on money, need a burner that puts fear into defenses)

Julius Jones

i'd try to resign flozell, guys like that just don't grow on trees. and maybe he could be moved to other positions as he loses his athleticism. franchising him would give the cowboys another year to find his replacement.

i'm inclined to allow colombo to leave because a young tackle like him is going to cost a ton of money and he's just not a dominant guy. i'd think he'd get bigg money from some team. free/mcquistan/marten should take his spot in 2 yrs.

basically i think you pay guys that make a difference, and allow the JAGs to walk in place of cheap rookies. of course then it's vital the draft is done well.

draft wise, i'd trade both #1s for a difference maker on LT/DL/CB in that order otherwise average guys aren't going to be worth anything, which JJ has insinuated as well.

i have blind hope that stanback will be a good wr. he's big, has soft hands, and fast. being a qb he's gotta understand defenses. wade complimented him, but who knows. and another year for hurd and austin. still would need one of those small fast guys to replace glenn though, could act as the pr as well.

obviously Romo and Barber will be resigned. I am still unsure of Newmann contract status after this year.

Flo has been pretty steady so the coaches would have to feel confident in what they see from Free or Mcq in practice to let Flo leave.

I do think there has to be a shake-up in the DB. The only lock is Newmann at CB. I wont suprise me to see Henry move to FS and Dallas draft a CB in 1st round.

Newman's contract isn't voidable til 09, so we're good for another year with him. This info is per Adam.

Crayton and Reeves have value, but its all about what it takes to resign them.

Regarding Flozell, it all depends on Mcquiston and Free and how ready the coaches feel they are. Flozell won't come cheep, but Dallas can't afford not to have a viable LT.

I think Dallas should consider resigning Barber to a long term deal and drafting somone that can spell him.....then let JJ go.....

I'm not sure on Hamlin, we'll see how the season unfolds. I'm of the opinion Dallas needs a cover FS and I feel Hamlin's strengths are similar to Roy's. That said, he may be the best option for 08 out there since the likely replacement is a rookie.

Another key gy is Keith Davis, who I'm in favor of keeping for ST's.

Keep the long snapper= good ones are hard to find.
Reeves-looks like a good 3rd. If not too expensive keep him.
The hotel= depends on Free and McQ.
Hamlin- wait till end of season.
the rest - eh.
Romo does not even have to be mentioned.

if not interested in re-signing Hamlin and with 2 picks in the 1st round, UTEP's Quintin Demps could be a draft gem. He's excellent in coverage, has played a little at CB this year at UTEP and has been a difference maker in big games (ask Kevin Kolb).

Some draft prospect sites have him as a 2nd/3rd rounder, he's better than that. Same sites said Bobby Carpenter would be a better pick than UTEP's Thomas Howard, so read into the "expert" analysis what you want. 6'1 205. He's 3rd on UTEP's team w/ 37 tackles, 3 INTs, 7PDef. He can also return punts/kickoffs.

Yes, I'm a homer...(utep alum), but last year, I really wanted Dallas to take a shot on OLB from UTEP, Thomas Howard. Oakland ended up taking him at #38 in the 2nd around:

Bobby Carpenter (career): 24 tackles, 1 PDef, 1.5sacks
Thomas Howard (2007 alone): 31 tackles, 6 PDef, 1sack, 2TDs.

Demps has the potential to be a solid NFL FS.

We need to sign Reeves to a 3-4 year deal.

I like the way he shutdown Moss.

I do agree with you -- Reeves has shown some nice play. He should get a decent deal to stay here as the 3 or, more likely, 4.

Well, since I want Dallas to start getting into a compensatory pick "cycle" now that the team is mostly built, I want most of these UFAs to leave, other than Romo.
