I was thinking we keep 10 defensive linemen. Last year we kept 9, but went really short at linebacker (5) with awful results. We also went deep at safety with 6 (something I don't think happens again). We also went short at corner with 4. 9 last year.

So, was I crazy to think 10 DL? Well this year I don't think we'll take 2 centers, and we may take 3 tight ends as opposed to 5. How many running backs will we take? 4 again? But does that include a fullback? I think you're going to see us go light at half back and tight end. 3 half backs, 3 tight ends, maybe 1 fullback. Total of 7 this year versus 9 last year.

Ultimately, I have to say 10 DL isn't likely. It'll probably be 9, but Lawrenece will be placed on the PUP, and Spencer will also likely be placed on the PUP. I think the PUP list will be pretty large this year. So who are our 9 linemen?

DT
Henry Melton
Nick Hayden
Terrell McClain
Davon Coleman

DE
George Selvie
Jeremy Mincey
Martez Wilson
Dartwan Bush

X-Factor
Tyrone Crawford

PUP
Amobi Okoye
Ben Gardner
DeMarcus Lawrence
Anthony Spencer
Josh Brent

Practice Squad
Ken Bishop

I think we can get a serious boost from defensive linemen coming off the PUP, without being forced to rush them back. In the mean time I think Bush and Wilson can get some experience and snaps. I think ultimately Hayden and McClain should be bounced off the team later on.

I think Mincey and Wilson or Bush will be bumped off with the return of Anthony Spencer and DeMarcus Lawrence.

I think Ben Gardner has put himself in a precarious position where he will ultimately not be able to make the team. Which is unfortunate. Hopefully we can get him on the Practice Squad.

It'll be interesting whether Marinelli really wants Okoye after all is said and done.

You have Ben Bass absent from your list of D lineman that make the team?!

Bold prediction my friend. Very bold.

Other than that everything in the OP makes logical sense. Not a bad prediction.

X-Factor as in he plays DE and DT

I think it will b ehard for Bishop to make the squad. Who do you think he replaces? Did you mean he replaced Hayden?

At this point I think Ben Bass is done.

I'd guess only 9 again with Crawford, Mincey, McClain, Hayden, Melton, and Selvie as locks. The last 3 will be determined by preseason play and it wouldn't surprise me if the battle goes all the way to the 4th game.

Hopefully the DE's can play at least decent until reinforcements come in the way of Lawrence and Spencer around week 6.

Maybe Bishop is just my pet cat. but he reportedly has some good power with decent movement.
I know they like Hayden cause he died in the trenches for them over and over last year. He doesn't have
any rush or little.Hayden will diffidently get every chance to get a spot and they might just go with and extra spot
to keep him. Like I said Bishop is a pet cat

According to Broaddus the other day, the light seemed to come on for Bishop and he was showing good improvement.

I guess we'll soon see how long lasting the battery is.

I'd be slightly concerned if Wilson, Hayden and Bush make the active roster. I realize Spencer and Lawrence need time but I'd rather go with them to start the season. I'd also prefer Bishop over Hayden because of his pass rush ability.

if Hayden makes the team then we really are not that much better than last year.

I get what you're saying, but I don't necessarily agree. Hayden played more snaps (I believe) than any DL on this team last year. That was a problem. Now, if he is just a healthy rotation player with experience in this system for 2014, we could still have a better overall unit. Health, like last year and the year before, is a huge issue. I think we will have a more solid group overall. We won't be top heavy with a huge drop-off after the best couple of players. We were trotting out guys just signed off the street (that week) for significant snaps last season. IF guys like Spencer, Lawrence, and maybe Okoye can return before midseason, they can possibly give this D the boost it needs to be pretty solid for the second half of the season. Lots of "ifs". We all know that, but I just see many more capable DL players on this roster than last season. We had Hatcher, and Selvie to some degree, playing at a pretty high level much of the year and that was it. Ware was an injured shell of his former self. Hayden was not very good as the season wore on and played way too many snaps. The rest were a bunch of bodies. It's amazing that we had a winning record going into that last game (a credit to our offense and special teams).

You're been around long enough that you should know the rules. They can't put anybody the PUP that has taken 1 rep in training camp. That leaves Lawrence out as a possibility for the PUP. I think Gardner has a few practice reps also which makes PUP a no-go for him also.

They could put Lawrence on the Designated-for-Return IR; however, he has to be on the 53 after the initial cut before they can move him to dfr-IR. At that time they can bring back a player that passed through waivers. The problem is that he can't return for 8 weeks and his injury might only have him out for 4 weeks.

Okoye is on the NFI list. It's similar to PUP, but I think they can return to action at anytime without the 8 week wait. I think Brent could be put on NFI also.

Generally, it's more likely that a UDFA will clear waivers than any draft pick, including a 7th rounder. They would have a better change to retain Bush on the PS than Bishop unless Bush does something spectacular in the preseason games.

It appears that Crawford has been practicing more at DE than at DT. If he is considered a DE, then you would have the following if you switched Bush and Bishop:

DT
Henry Melton
Nick Hayden
Terrell McClain
Davon Coleman
Ken Bishop

DE
George Selvie
Jeremy Mincey
Martez Wilson
Tyrone Crawford

Situation DE (Nickel)
Kyle Wilber (does not count against the total DL number because he is the SLB on base downs)

Practice Squad
Dartwan Bush

Lawrence would be on that DE list also, right? Since he can't be on the PUP, and IR designated to return might have him sitting out healthy for a month.

Yes, good observation. I intended to put him on the list. That would put them at 10 DL which I believe is realistic. They went heavy on OL back when they were having problems there.

If they keep stopgap guys like Hayden and Mincey, then they need more spots for developmental guys.

I think 9 for sure and if someone impresses enough they could go 10.

Nicely done. I can easily see this. Unless, of course Spencer or Brent through a wrench into it by coming back and playing well, relatively quickly.
