I don't feel the need to join in on any position on the current draft. As so many have stated, this takes several years to make a splash or be run out of town. So all the assurances, or detractors have no bearing at this time.
Neither does categorizing what the team's intentions were.
If they intended to draft player X and he was taken by someone else at the last minute. And that player turns out to be a Hall of Famer - yet the player Dallas took is a scrub, then did Dallas intentionally take the scrub, or was he foisted on them by circumstance?
So here is the draft class that is up at the plate for this year.
2010s 1 7 0 0 Josh Brent DT Illinois
2010 1 1 24 24 Dez Bryant WR Oklahoma State
2 2 23 55 Sean Lee LB Penn State
3 4 28 126 Akwasi Owusu-Ansah DB Indiana (PA)
4 6 10 179 Sam Young T Notre Dame
5 6 27 196 Jamar Wall DB Texas Tech
6 7 27 234 Sean Lissemore DT William & Mary
Brent is done by his own stupidity. He had talent, but that means nothing if he cannot get on the field, or even in a uniform.
Dez is in position to show the league he is the real deal. I expect him to be in the right spot, making plays, and being a fiery player that inspires with his attitude. Anything less than him showing a complete season will disappointment unless there is injury. Time for the child to become a man.
Lee is the real deal but injury is the problem. I am not ready to anoint him as a injury risk, but it is getting close. If he sits out any portion of this season, the team will need to begin the search for his replacement. I hate that idea, but he has to play and play significant minutes to be considered something more than an oft injured player. His football savvy doesn't count if he is on the sidelines.
Ansah - wasted pick
Young - wasted pick
Wall - wasted pick
Lissemore - time for him to step up and show what he has.
So this is the draft class that concerns me. Not the happy face fans who proclaim victory in 2013. They were the same ones claiming victory last year. Or the disgruntled fans who proclaim defeat. Nor the draft gurus, talking heads, mediots, and others who say they know and don't.
To be determined for this draft class of 2013.
But just to make a point - the 2009 draft class reunion...
2009 1 3 5 69 Jason Williams LB Western Illinois
2 3 11 75 Robert Brewster T Ball State
3 4 1 101 Stephen McGee QB Texas A&M
4 4 10 110 Victor Butler DE Oregon State
5 4 20 120 Brandon Williams DE Texas Tech
6 5 7 143 DeAngelo Smith DB Cincinnati
7 5 30 166 Michael Hamlin DB Clemson
8 5 36 172 David Buehler K USC
9 6 24 197 Stephen Hodge DB Texas Christian
10 6 35 208 John Phillips TE Virginia
11 7 18 227 Mike Mickens DB Cincinnati
There should be a core of players from this draft that are taking starting positions.
This should put things in perspective.
