Which franchise tag for Pickens? Exclusive vs non-exclusive

I ALSO APPLAUD POSTS that aren't longer than entire newspapers you love to write!!
I'm sorry to have to correct you too many times,

I do not write and last I checked this is not something that I'm being graded on in school, this is not a work product, This is not even something I'm doing as a moderator, or anything...

I am not doing this as a semiprofessional or professional writer,

this is simply social media I think of it more as the Wild West We just all have opinions and whether we have short ones in 75 more posts split up into smaller sample sizes or we can have just a few of them that are really long but last I checked there are no rules there are no formats that would be Twitter there are some other places that will limit you but not here this is a full powered forum,

But once again,

I do not write I use talk to text and that's how sometimes it just goes off the rails, Those extra-long ones are just rants, they're coffee comas, and I get triggered around here just as much as anyone else,IE venting,

getting tired of the redundant posts,

like right now ,

the most redundant post is talking about George Pickens..

so I will go off the rails sometimes tired of seeing the same old same old Whatever happens with George will happen, and I appreciate either way if Jerry decides he it will help the team, he will trade him, get a first round pick ,get extra money ,and rebuild the team, if he stays here at a reasonable cost, then it helps the Cowboys either way, and as a fan I'm happy..

This is how the Cowboys negotiate contracts in the press. Get ready for another Micah situation.

I don’t think the team has ever once used the non exclusive tag.

If Jerry wants to keep the player, he doesn’t want another team negotiating the deal he would have to match.
I don’t recall it being used

Well, I just that the Miami Dolphins are outright releasing Tyreke Hill, I know he's coming off an injury but that should water down the market a little because somebody's going to take Hill over bidding for the services that George Pickens.

I'm just saying when the market gets flooded with a few more players there may be less of a market which could favor the Cowboys IMHO

Or the Cowboys can trade George Pickens and pick up a guy like hill For a bit less maybe, I don't know his recovery time but I'm betting we can wait on it a little bit..hmmmm??

Still hard to believe that some of you are so delusional that you don't believe the agent and player did the same thing they were bad actors

I mean the player himself came out and told the media early in this process right around this time last year that he didn't need to be A $40 million plus player, he didn't need to be the highest paid non quarterback, and that he wanted to be here, and all of a sudden that changed when the agent told him that the contract was garbage, told Jerry to not even submit that contract, because they felt it was disrespectful to offer the guy 40, because they actually wanted 45 to 47.

We are a year later, and you're trying to say this is all Jerry It's funny that they didn't negotiate that way with most of their players including Prescott, Prescott played on the franchise tag, got hurt, got paid, His next contract came you didn't hear anything about it and all of a sudden he got the biggest contract the Cowboys ever handed out, largest contract in the NFL at the time..

How come some players and agents don't seem to have to do this with Jerry, and others take it way too far, and there's one case and you're going to use that one case and say this was all on Jerry, and Parsons and his agent didn't use that posturing, and take it to another level themselves?

This a negotiation both sides have to play ball and if one doesn't want to compromise and they also use the court of public opinion...

This is one individual case and you're going to keep trying to cite it as if we weren't there, The Agent and player were eagerly responsible for all that nonsense that went on in the media...

I was going to say this. I’m not even sure what kind of “creative element” Werder could possibly be referring to. Pickens and his agent are most likely just looking for the most possible guaranteed $ over the next 3 seasons so he can hit the market again at age 27.
The league really doesn't permit "creative elements" anymore, Werder's just talking out of his rear. The only real poison pill a team can include is something that is harmful to themselves, also, like guaranteeing the entire contract. IMO, this whole thing won't end well. A combination of Pickens, Mulugheta, and Jerry Jones is a disaster waiting to happen. Franchise him, and get the most you can for him, because it will get ugly.

Non exclusive seems a no brainer to me…
We either sign him to a contract that both parties are happy with, or he goes elsewhere and we get two 1st rounders for him.

all this talk about franchise tags....I think you guys at CZ really need to slap the franchise tag on @Coogiguy03 .
As the #1 thread-starter here, you can't let the Great Coog walk! And no tag and trade either. Lock him up long term!
I've tried nobody has answered my calls these mods must really work long hours

When does the restructuring of contracts need to happen to tag him?

Definitely agree with Ed Werder. Cowboys need to put the Exclusive Franchise Tag on George Pickens, thus securing him top 5 average WR pay AND keep from other teams trying to steal him while the Cowboys get this new big contract deal finalized. George Pickens wants to stay in Dallas. The Cowboys want to keep him. Let's get it done ASAP.
How's it a steal if you get 2 FIRST round picks? You'd be foolish not welcome that deal.

Werder and Mosher debated this on X.....
I can honestly see both sides but exclusive stop other teams from setting the terms of your player's contract IF you wanna keep him. It's why it's usually reserved for QBs or special elite players that teams have no intention of losing.

Franchise tag details

The franchise tag is more common than the transition tag, but here’s how each one works:

Transition tag: If applied to a player, he gets the higher figure between either 120% of his previous salary or the average of the top 10 cap hits at his position over the previous five years. The player can negotiate with other teams during free agency and if he receives an offer sheet, his current team can match. If the team doesn’t match, the player leaves for the contract offered and the original team doesn’t get compensation.

Franchise tag: There are the exclusive and nonexclusive franchise tag options. On the exclusive tag, a player can’t negotiate with other teams. However, they also get paid more, either the average of the top five cap hits from the 2025 campaign at the player’s position or 120% of their previous salary. The nonexclusive tag permits a player to negotiate with every other team. If the player signs an offer sheet, his original team can match and retain him on that deal. If that team elects not to match, it receives two first-round picks from the acquiring team. Furthermore, the nonexclusive tag pays the player the average of the top five cap hits over the past five seasons at the player’s position or 120% of their prior salary, whichever is more lucrative.

I would use the non exclusive tag. He can negotiate with other teams. We have the first right of refusal or 2 first round picks.

Seems like a no brainer.

I think it depends on how close the Cowboys think they really are to winning the NFC and competing for a ring. If they think they are right there (after a lot of positive changes to the current roster via draft and free agency), then use the exclusive tag. But if they are in a re-build, I'd use the non-exclusive tag, hoping someone would take him and give us the (2) first-round picks.

I don't think anyone here believes we are that close to being in the Super Bowl in 2026. I could be wrong, and always hope we do make it, but it is what it is.
After the draft and Free Agency would be too late.
