We were 28th, I believe, in run defense last year. With new additions to the team, which players do you think will help against the run?

I know Sanborn is pretty good against the run. I think Toia might help but may also need time to develop. And Turner is also pretty solid at run defense, although not much of a pass rusher.

Am I missing anyone? Are there any players who you think will step up in the run defense this year?

Well, I'm not sure it will happen, but I really hope Mazi can help with this. I'm not holding my breath, though.
He does his part in this regard well enough. I think people are too low on Mazi because he isn't flashy. But I've looked into this and some of the criticism is unwarranted.

right now they are all question marks and cast offs from other teams because they weren't good enough and they came from some bad teams, so it says a lot.
Wishing Toia to help, is just like Wishing Rodgers to help, people are just in love with the size, but both are slow, not much push up the middle and not very mobile, which then can be schemed against with zone blocks and stretch plays. I am not holding my breath on either of those guys.

can we get better? being a bottom feeder then only place to go is up....but how much better? can it make a difference. two years ago we were middle of the pack and got abused in playoffs. same as three years ago and the year before that. until they are a solid top 10 run defense, we will struggle against better teams and in the playoffs.

Unless.

We also establish a run game to counter.

EZ graded out pretty well against the run.

Yeah, but my question is . . . is he ready for the NFL? I think so. But I think he'll need some time to bulk up and get stronger and then he'll be solid vs the run. If he can do it this year, I'll be impressed.

I'm skeptical the new additions will be drastic improvements in the run game. I think the bigger questions are how does a guy like Kneeland develop going into year 2. How does Eberflus utilize Parsons? I think Zimmer did a nice job of using his athletic backers last year to take contain responsibilities and have the DEs crash down....this was a disaster early in the year, but really became a solid tool as the year went on.

I think Sanborn could be refreshing at times as that downhill backer we all want, but I also fear the DTs we have wont make his life any easier.

Brian Shottenheimer. Known as “Shotty” to @5Stars. He’s been saying since day 1 they MUST have a more physical running game. He alone, more than any player, will help having a good running game. Booker’s going to help as well.

IMO one of Dallas weaknesses in the run has been on the edge.

When Parsons gets run on, he isn't the best at setting the edge. Cardinals 2 years ago ran on his side often.
Against the Ravens, Dallas edge ate on a lot of inside fakes and left the edge wide open.

Fowler is back, but he's more of a pass rusher than run stopper. Same with EZ, at least early on.

Will linebackers with more a run first mindset help? Sure, but if the line can't win their battles or be in the right spot, it can be a mess again. Mazi could become a legit 1 tech but if the edge is open all day, he can't be superman and run down a RB headed to the 7 or 8 gap

Parsons is pretty weak against the run. He gets a pass from most, but he really needs to improve. It's just, he likely won't.

I think we're going to need another new addition to anchor the middle of the defense.

Jerry is supposed to make another trade possibility DJ reader might be a new addition to the Cowboys and possibly help stop the run.

Jonathan hankins just signed with Seattle for another year so he's out.

What's the word on Linville Joseph is he still on our roster??

Get 'er done, Jerry.

...he's to gassed getting to edges. He goes 100% going for the Sack, sometimes misses the run or screens. Dlaw was the same. Homerun or nothing..lol.

I hope Eberflus helps, by moving him in favorable positions.

It's going to be a group effort you know swarming defense that's what Eber flus likes and don't forget all the big fatties come on man it's going to be three or 4 of those guys fighting for that interior defensive lineman it starts up front and you don't even mention the front and how competitive that will be with Toia, Rogers, Mazi, and Akingbesote....

also I can almost fully guarantee that that move up to get James the linebacker from Florida that's a Flus pick,

he probably begged for that guy why would you move up and use two draft resources to get a guy that probably could have fell to you but I'm betting he wanted him that means he might be in the mix..

I think the most profound addition will be a year of experience for Guyton and Beebe. I believe that both will be greatly improved, technically.

I believe that a year of NFL conditioning will have made then stronger with increased stamina.

I think that they will contribute to a more cohesive unit, more used to the guys around them and with a better understanding of what their teammates ae going to do under certain circumstances. This should make them more efficient.

When we are talking about improvement in this way from the O-line, it has a "trickle-down" effect of improving every other aspect of the team, particularly the running game.

If the Cowboys had selected a RB during the first two days of the draft then I might have said the greatest improvement was the quality of the new RBs. It might still be but we won't know until the season is underway.

However, as it stands today, I think the greatest addition to the team is last year's experience obtained by our young O-linemen.

And really, I think they improved every aspect of the running game from multiple, competitive RB's to drafting Booker to their new O-line coach. We will see.
