The entire premise of the topic is pretty much within the title, but just to repeat it incase it cut off for anyone -"Which of the current Dallas Cowboys will be remembered most fondly by history?"

I believe that it will be Jason Witten - it is entirely likely that he'll be the last great TE whom is not a super athlete, WR lining up as a TE. He's already statistically the third greatest to ever play TE and will likely finish at number two.

I agree that it will probably be Witten. There are plenty of valid reasons for that both on and off the field. I also think that the one play where he ran down field after he lost his helmet put a pretty strong memory into our collective heads. Fair or not, a play like that leaves an impression.

Edit: For the record, I also think Ware is the better player.

Ware, he's the prolific pass rusher of his era.

Witten's a great TE, reliable, durable and considered one of the better TEs in the league... But he's held in much higher regards within the Dallas fan base than he is nationwide. For most of Witten's career he was considered behind Gates and Gonzalez, and now Gronkowski, Vernon Davis, and Jimmy Graham are the new headliners.

Witten doesn't have the sizzle those other TEs have, which unfortunately plays into legacy.

He should finish with the numbers to get him in the HOF, but it may take a little while.

It'll be Tony Romo. By the time he's done he'll have all the records and hopefully a ring or two.

He's not going to be a first ballot HoF, sorry. He has 44 career TDs, that an average of 4 per season.

In comparison, Antonio Gates who came in the same year as Witten, has 83 career TDs. Rob Gronkowski, who's only been in the league 3 years, already has 38. And Tony Gonzalez goes without saying.

The era gets taken into account, and although Witten is apart of this revitalized TE era, he's still at best the 4th TE from it. That's an uphill battle in itself, and averaging 4Tds a season for his career doesn't help his case.

Yes he can hang with those guys in receptions and yards, but he also has a significantly higher volume of targets than them... So one could make the case he's just the beneficiary of an uncanny amount of targets for a TE... Without delivering points despite that high volume of looks.

He's a ring of honor lock, and he may get in the hall eventually... But he ain't a first ballot guy.

If you mean remembered by NFL fans, it would be Ware. Although Witten will probably be more popular by Dallas Cowboys fans, around the NFL, they know Ware. But there's a chance Dez Bryant could shatter Witten & Ware and go down as an historic figure in Dallas Cowboys History. But to totally be remembered, you need to win something important. I'm a casual fan of baseball, I don't start watching until the playoffs, so if you don't make it there, chances are, I wont' know you.

Ware. Witten simply hasn't gotten in the endzone enough.

Ware also has the benefit of the fact that sacks stand alone as a significant "All Time" list by football fans and the media and he's already in the Top 20.

To get Witten in one of those "Top 20" lists, you need qualifiers. His name will come up when discussing TE's not not when you're going over broader "All Time" lists like yardage, TD's, etc.

They're both going to the HOF though.

Witten. He has simply crushed many franchise records for tight end and I have a hard time thinking of any other Cowboy who was clearly THE best at his player position as Witten.

Ware also.

The reason Witten and Ware will be remembered so well is because people don't perceive the lack of playoff success as being their fault. (They blame Romo, which is unfair, but a QB does have a lot more control over a game's outcome than a TE or OLB.)

This is basically right.

Fair or not, it's hard to imagine this era of Cowboys having more than one Hall of Famer. That would be Ware. Then Bryant down the line is a possibility.
