Which of these free agent DL do you guys want?

I don't think Dallas will be touching any high priced FA

Jerry Jones on FA "We want to be active. I think the word really is attentive because we won't be active if the player is out of kilter at what we can afford or out of kilter with what his number is relative to what we can do is. So, it just is going to depend.

I expect Dallas to continue to look to mid level FA that has worked as opposed the large break the bank deals. I could see Dallas taking a chance on Nick Fairley since I think that will likely be a lower end deal.

Jerry basically indicated that on the DL they are looking at numbers of "rushmen" instead of one high priced player, so they will be attentive but are not breaking the bank for one free agent defensive player.

He literally said the defensive system they now run argues for a quantity of players over allocating all your resources to a single addition.

So they will probably approach free agency by adding some players who will come mid range to low on the cap hit on defense.

Alualu is active and could come at a price Dallas could afford. Rubin is a big body that could be handy as well. Odrick is a player we were interested in when he came out. Tapp is a solid veteran that could come reasonably as well.

I like McPhee, but he is probably going to break the bank with some team that has the cap dollars. Sheard is another one in that same boat. Graham is another to look at.

All in all, I feel pretty confident we will not be players for Suh or Pierre-Paul, so it is not even worth consideration.

I hope he stays true to that, frankly high priced FA have burned us more than the mid-level FA. I have seen Dallas get more bang for the buck with guys like Kyle Kosier and Jeremy Mincey. I do think getting a pass rusher is important and even Marnielli made the comments this unit needs a pass rusher. This draft is pretty strong at DL and I just hope we can get that in the draft along with Demarcus Lawrence who I think with this off season and a full camp will become a factor in the pass rush

A lot of names on that list fall into this category.

True, they will be concentrating on signing their own and might dabble here or there but there will be a controlled budget.

You know "doing whatever they want in free agency".

Sheard and Graham intrigue me. They seemed to do well in the 4-3 as DEs. Neither should be super expensive after having had down years miscast in 3-4's. I want at least 2 FA DLs that can create pressure. We do not want to go into the draft desperate for a pass rusher like last year. I loved the Lawrence pick, but we overpaid with our 3rd to move up out of desperation. Fill all the holes during FA (including a decent veteran FS who understands angles and has ball skills), then let the draft come to you. If a stud DL or LB falls to you, take him. If a great OT falls to you, take him. Don't worry too much about what you just drafted or signed. Almost any position on our defense could use young, talented player. Bottom line, use FA to fill holes/improve weaknesses and the draft to increase the overall talent level of roster.

1) Hardy (if acquitted and not punished by League)
2) JPP (if money is right...Marinelli could light a fire under him)
3) Suh (money will be ridiculous that's why he is third on the list)

Those are the only true difference makers I see on the lists. I would be fine with Dallas giving Hardy $12.5 mil per year. With JPP, although younger, I wouldn't go over $10.5 mil or $11 mil per year.

McPhee and Shread are interesting but not that much better than what may be available at #27 come April 30, 2015.

some truth to that but we cant just give up on radically altering our defense next year.

Pat Sims, Oakland Raiders
Letroy Guion, Green Bay Packers
B.J. Raji, Green Bay Packers

I like these guys for potential additions inside. I think GB is going to try and keep Guion, but maybe not. If they do, then Raji should be free. He was hurt all of last year and had been playing DE for the previous 2 or 3 years. I think moving him back to nose would help him out.

who said we are giving up? This is a deep draft for the DL and there are mid level FA who can help us on defense. Dallas did not build this offense off of high priced FA and we don't have to sell the ranch to get 1 defensive player.

Suh and Justin Houston (obviously)

If I'm bargain hunting, I'd like to take on DT Ahtyba Rubin and DE Derrick Morgan.

Rubin has mostly been a DE in Cleveland's 3-4 with some NT. Great vs the run and could be the kind of DT Marinelli wants as a 1t that can still provide a rush. Can probably play some 3t in spots but I don't think he has the quickness that's wanted there. Only 28.

Morgan's first two years in the league were poor, but I think his strength wasn't where it needed to be. He's developed and has had around 6 sacks each of the last 3 years. Only 26. Has had 3 head coaches and multiple changes to defensive scheme. In the maddening instances where Marinelli has a DE dropping into coverage, Morgan would be more capable than pretty much any of our DEs. Maybe catch a late bloomer a la Barwin.

I'm also interested in Jared Odrick at 3t but kind of feel that position is Crawford's to lose and if anyone is added there, it will be a rookie.

I would kick the tires on Derrick Morgan, but overall that list is pretty depressing. The higher profile guys are going to get massive deals because there isn't a whole lot of talent on the market. Someone is going to seriously overpay to see JPP average 8 games a season. I pray it's not us.

I'd be happy if we landed one of these: Suh, JPP, Houston, Orakpo, or Hardy. Seems like a pipe dream though. Hopefully Jerry is willing to spend this summer because a guy like that to apply a consistent pass rush could put us over the top.

Greg Hardy, first and foremost. He's the most talented FA DE, but I don't know about his legal stuff.

Other guys I would try -

Derrick Morgan
Jason Worilds
Jabaal Sheard
Adrian Clayborn, if he's cheap.

Agree with your take.

Those are all good prospects.

I don't see the Cowboys breaking the bank for Suh or Pierre-Paul either.
