This is a position of need.
Pollard is great but he doesn't have the body that can absorb a full game of carries. I think it will have to be 50% of the carries for Pollard, 35% the other guy and 15 % to a group that includes WR's QB 's and the occasional 3rd RB.
However, if anything should happen to just one of these guys, and we know it happens, there must be a viable option. The Cowboys need to go into training camp feeling good about three RB's.
I hear about Pollard's rehab timeline just like I heard about Gallup's timeline and Tyron's timeline last season. I would love for him to be 100% before the season but those timelines and those that give us those timelines are unreliable. Pollard may not be ready to start the season.
Malik Davis is the emergency back you are forced to use during an injury or when the game is out of reach and you want to spare your first two backs some carries. If he was special then we would have known by now. In the 49er playoff Pollard went down early in the 2nd quarter. Still, Malik ended up with three offensive snaps and zero carries.
With all this in mind, the Cowboys should strongly consider drafting two viable backs capable of earning carries with real potential, not just warm bodies.
In a 17 game season, you can't look at the running game in terms of a single runner, especially when you consider the statements made by McCarthy about expanding that part of the offense. In addition, you can't assume that both backs will go through a 17 game season completely unscathed.
A duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and Tank Bigsby would provide both speed and power as well as a buffer that can absorb some injury issues. Combined with Pollard, that squad would be set for the season and perhaps several seasons after.
