Which Sleeper WR Will Make The 53 Man Roster?

We already know that Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams and Dwayne Harris are locks for the Dallas Cowboys’ roster. And I wouldn’t hesitate to call Cole Beasley a lock as well because he has a defined role on the team that no other player can fill which is his slot ability. So that makes four players who we know will be on the final 53 man roster comes week one (assuming no major injuries). So today, we are going to look at who else might stick on the roster come final cut down day. Let’s first take a look at the guys competing for one or two roster spots:

Before we discuss these players individually, I want you to take a look at the group as a whole. Notice anything specific? Under Will McClay, the Cowboys are looking for athletes to fill out the bottom of their roster. They are looking for the next Miles Austin with every last roster spot. They want size, length and speed. And I admire that approach because those players are more likely to breakout and become star players than smaller guys who lack elite athleticism. Seems like common sense right? The rewards of hitting on a player who is 6’4 and runs a 4.4 is far greater than hitting on one who is 5’11 and runs a 4.6. So let’s take a look at each player individually:

My vote is for Tim Benford. He stuck around on the practice squad for two years, so the staff must like something about him. Bryan Broaddus on the Cowboys' website said Benford made a lot of impressive catches during his work on the scout team last season.

Great post, by the way.

We have some really big, young, targets. ONE OF THEM HAS TO MAKE THIS TEAM and contribute. If so, the Cowboys scouting dept. will look genius. Seriously, one of these giants has to make this team and begin to contribute. Street in my opinion is a given with his pedigree.

Devon Steet, I'd say is a lock, by merit of where he was chosen in the draft. Last I heard, L'Damian Washington has already been put out for the year, but I'm not certain of that; otherwise, he would have been my 1st choice to round out the WR group at the 6 spot. So, I'm gonna say LaRon Byrd, though I know little about him, just based on what a guy his size can do to defense with that type of speed, if he can do all the little things too; e.g run crisp routes, catch the ball consistently, tailor his routes to the Safeties position, to diminish the chance of interception, etc.

Checking out the video of L'Damian vs. Texas A&M, it looks like he's just jogging through the plays that aren't specifically directed to him. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's the impression I get.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Bedford has stuck around a long time. That just means he can do one thing okay. To make it as a fringe WR you have to play teams.

I think Newsome and Benford have the least chance to make the team.

I really don't think any. We go with 5 and those are the expected guys.
I have a hard time seeing this. Matter of fact, it wouldn't surprise me if they go long at WR, perhaps 7 total, if they are weaker at another position, and leave themselves the flexibility to modify the roster going into week 1. I seem to remember something like that when they surprising kept Miles Austin and Sam Hurd on the roster as undrafted rookies.

I don't know if any of them are sleepers but if the Cowboys try to sneak Street or Boyd onto the PC they will lose them.
