IMO, we need these rookies and young players to have a positive impact as soon as possible in the near future for us to have a successful season:
  • Either Cooper Bebee, Brock Hoffman or TJ Bass develops at Center- One of those guys - probably Bebee must emerge as a viable starter at center.
  • Tyler Guyton at LT- Guyton being able to hold down the LT position will allow Tyler Smith to stay at LG and along with Bebee at C, Zack Martin at RG, and Terance Steele at RT would make the OL solid.
  • Mazi Smith developing as a viable 1 tech- we all know Mazi was a disappointment last year. We need him to develop into an effective DT in Zimmer’s new scheme.
  • DeMarvion Overshown and/or Marist Luifau develop into effective LBs- We need lots of help at LB. Zimmer’s defensive schemes are very LB dependent in stopping the running game. One or both of these guys are needed to develop and perform quickly.

Which young buck battle are you rooting for the most? Which one would devastate you if they don’t win it?
  • QB - Trey Lance vs Cooper Rush
  • RB - Rico Dowdle, Deuce, TBD vs Zeke
  • WR - Tolbert vs Turpin vs Brooks for #3?
  • TE - Schoon vs Hendershot, Phillips vs Hendershot
  • OL - Pick one. All starters except Zack and Tyler are probably up for grabs.
  • DT - Mazi vs a tree stump
  • DE - Sam Williams, Marshawn Kneeland vs Tank
  • LB - Is there enough depth to even have a battle for all 3 spots?
  • S - Thomas, Bell? vs Wilson and Hooker
  • CB - Top 3 are locked. Battle is for depth.
Really good topic! I for one hope that Trey Lance can step up and beat out Cooper Rush. Just for the simple fact we gave up our 4th for this years draft and boy that pick could have helped us this year.
OL I hope that Guyton can come in and win the LT spot.
Anything good for DT do we have one lol

Battle: You vs Slang!! "Young Buck", don't use this type of slang as there are sooooo many old Cowboy fans in here that don't know what this means especially the ones without lateral agility!!! lol.

CB: I want to see Scott vs Carson to see who ends up winning the backup role, I say you might as well cut ways with Izzy

IMHO,
QB - Trey Lance vs Cooper Rush- YES
RB - Rico Dowdle, Deuce, TBD vs Zeke Yes
WR - Tolbert vs Turpin vs Brooks for #3? easy its Turpin first in and the rest are truly fighting for 4
TE - Schoon vs Hendershot, Phillips vs Hendershot -Schoon's to lose
OL - Pick one. All starters except Zack and Tyler are probably up for grabs. nah steeles job is safe for now
DT - Mazi vs a tree stump Meh
DE - Sam Williams, Marshawn Kneeland vs Tank Umm tank is secure but Sams job to lose as first in
LB - Is there enough depth to even have a battle for all 3 spots? NOPE
S - Thomas, Bell? vs Wilson and Hooker - shouldn't be surprise but who knows
CB - Top 3 are locked. Battle is for depth. agreed UNLESS Diggs is slow to return

Throw the young TE Stephens i think his name was, into the mix, was hurt, but turned heads. Hope they mix him in as TE & WR....
A mismatch heaven, and a blocking WR h@ll for a CB out wide.

Yeah, mistakenly put him as Phillips in the OP. Really liked what he was showing in preseason last year. Also heard on one of the Cowboys podcasts that the rumor was Hendershot was on the poop list and Stephens was playing his way into his spot. Wouldn’t be without precedent. Antonio Gates came out of nowhere as an UDFA lanky TE too. Novacek was a skinny nobody until the Cowboys got him. Shame on the ACL, hope Stephens can fight back.

True.
Guyton needs all the reps he can get, and he was drafted to be the starting LT, so why waste time.
Chuma knew he was odd man out as soon we picked Guyton.
This OL finally has some interesting depth, with Richards, Bass, Chuma and the rooks, I can look at that group and feel pretty positive about the OL becoming a real strength
at some point during the season, it was an OL overhaul, so there will be an obvious learning curve, but OL learn to gel quicker when they get the reps together.
The tackle position for both sides of the ball.

I want to see the wr #3 battle. Tolbert aint it. I want to see brooks and flournoy
We definitely going to be entertained a bit at WR3/4 battles during camp.
Keeping eye as much as possible on snap counts we will see 1 emerge, I believe that.
I like the talent comp that we have there now, camp will be fun watching this emerge.

I'm hoping Sam Williams and his mental approach experience a remarkable jump in their effectiveness. :flagwave:

I'm also hopomg Trey Lance turns out to be nearly as good as Jerry seems to think he is!

He has to strap on his big boy pants now and finally decide if he can handle a significant role, because not only Sam but many others as well need to grow up quick or get out of the way.

I think the battle for backup TE's is going to be exciting.

Really, I feel as if there are at least four of them with the potential to make the team, although perhaps two or three will make it. Whoever doesn't make it still has measurable NFL talent.

If the Cowboys wished to be proactive when it comes to picking up extra draft picks, they would speed up their selection process at this position and trade. Then again, a TE always seems to be stashed on Injured Reserve.

Of course, this preseason will determine Trey Lance's progress or lack thereof. I can't help but imagine the incredible advantages if he should really shine. No matter what Dak's future happens to be, having a young quarterback with elite potential has massive value.

I think the O-line battles will be a little unfair with the current draft picks given a huge advantage over the rest of the current squad. That's just the way it usually is, especially for a #1 draft pick.

What do you suppose Jerry values more, having the best guy starting or appearing competent as an NFL GM? I don't have the answer when I shouldn't even have to think about it.

I am also hoping that there is that improbable emerging star, the next DaRon Bland or Jay Ratliff. The Cowboys have been fortunate in their history to come across lower draft picks and undrafted rookies who played huge for them.

Could it be another DB like Carson? Could the Cowboys have stumbled upon their future Pro Bowl DT with Justin Rogers? Is WR Ryan Flournoy the true steal in this year's draft?

Gotta root for our OL rooks, but I'd also like to see DT Justin Rogers start getting reps this year. He's supposed to be tough against the run.
