Let 'em burn. Grab some marshmallows and a cold one, and watch the implosion of rosters and fan bases around the NFL as they slobber all over themselves over flawed temptresses and false illusions.

The 49ers are in free fall. The Eagles are no longer recognizable. Jacksonville is a Brinks truck without a GPS system to guide it. The Jets, the Bills, the Commanders.....well, they're still the Jets, Bills, and Commanders.

Meanwhile, the good teams stand pat and wait. Let the idiocy run its course, then find value and fill need with solid players that don't compromise every season through 2020. Note how little you hear from good teams during this first phase of free agency.

Stephen Jones said it best about the beginning of free agency, "You end up paying good players like great players." Yep, he's got that right.

There was a time when Jerry got caught up in the emotional energy of it all. It brought guys like Joey Galloway, La'Roi Glover, Ken Hamlin, Roy Williams, Brandon Carr - all pretty good players - but not the difference-making pieces for Super Bowl runs as hoped. Too many flaws to bandage with one or two hired hands.

I admit, I wanted Suh, and I'd like Hardy and Revis and Peterson and others. It's fun to play with other men's money and put together a seemingly perfect squad. Problem is, it never pans out that way.

It just doesn't work. These players are available for a reason, either because they bring baggage or they take up boatloads of cap space and displace too much leverage within an organization. When you owe a guy $60 million, he has an inordinate amount of power in a locker room over the coaches and players. You'd better make sure those are the right kind of guys that make that kind of money.

And so, my beloved Cowboys leave us waiting in the parlor like a nervous 16-year-old on a first date with the hottest girl in school. It's the biggest night of our life, and just another date for her.

The Cowboys are well-positioned to be opportunistic, or not. Don't lose sight of where things stand. The Cowboys are good - damned good - and will be even if they just draft their roster full.

Players want to play here again. Running backs want a chance behind that line. Receivers know what kind of ball Romo throws. Defensive players know what that offense can do for a defense, and that there's opportunity to start here on a good team. And there's always that star on the helmet that promises spotlight and attention not found in many places elsewhere.

That brings good players at fair prices. Maybe great ones at fair prices, too, but first you have to let the spending addicts have their turn. Unless a player is the final piece to a puzzle, it's best to let them go to languish in obscurity and grow old in a stack of another John's cash.

So as the Cowboys bide their time beautifully, just enjoy the overreaching, overpaying, and comical relief as bad teams try to find success through 30-day makeovers and roster supplementation. They're calling the Sham-wow guy for help in a bottle, and it ain't gonna work like the commercial.

Demarco Murray knows this. He doesn't want to leave, and he doesn't want another man running behind his offensive line. Dez has no desire to leave a fantastic situation here. Doug Free knows, too. It took stupid money to drag Parnell away, and wow are the Jaguars going to regret that one.

You have to just wait and see with Murray, and see if somebody wants to pay Hall of Fame money for just a good running back.

It's all good. Maybe Dallas gets a name guy, maybe not. Maybe Murray, maybe not. No matter what, they're going to be even better next season, so long as the great players already here stay upright, a couple of draft picks are the real deal, and a smart veteran or two are added to play Mincey-like roles.

While I appreciate your enthusiasm, I find far too much 'rah! rah!' in this one.

Way too much of a 'we can't lose' scenario being painted and I disagree with that.

The defense way overachieved based on level of talent last year and to expect it again, much less improvement with only rookie additions is foolish.

That is an insult to La'Roi Glover to include him with the others.

Yea, I didn't think Glover belonged in there, either, but I just took the whole thing for what he meant for it to be: reading entertainment.

One question. if Stephen Jones and Jerry are so smart. how come they have won 2 playoff games in almost 20 years?

Well said, erod.

There was a time, that Jerry was at the buffet gorging himself at the expense of his future health (just the poster before we wants)....and showing no real benefit from it for years on end.
It appears as though those days are, for the most part, behind us.

Geez the team goes to the playoffs for the 1st time in five years and suddenly they're so good they can't lose no matter how they approach the offseason.

If this team loses Murray and has nothing to show for it (as in a legit upgrade at another position of importance...like DE) this offseason will be a failure. Period. The only reason most say let him walk is so the team can upgrade the defensive line and that doesn't mean bringing in more "Mincey" types.

This thread reminds me of Jerry's thinking after this team's last playoff appearance.

Just a guess, but maybe it's because they used to over spend for guys that couldn't win a playoff game, let alone a Super Bowl.

I think you somewhat missed the point.

This approach the last 2-3 years is why we are where we are.
But yes, still a ton of work to do.

We WILL be active in the FA market, just not silly about it. Will McClay and Garrett both have a voice of reason that JJ will listen to. Probably also why in the draft we took Martin instead of shiny object.

Dallas has never been as terrible on FA spending as people like to believe.

La'Roi glover was a great pickup. Hamlin initially came on a 1-year deal. Williams and Galloway were trades, albeit poor ones. Carr got market value.

The number of big name FAs the Cowboys have signed in the cap era is minimal, and none have really been debacles. I mean, who was the worst FA they signed...Marco Rivera who got hurt? Mike Vanderjagt? Anthony Henry?

Nice OP erod. I have not been hyped upped for the start of FA as usual, because I figure there will be no big splashes from our FO. Which is good. I only am a bit hyped to see if we lose any players of significance. Or re-sign any. But not going to get all up or down.

Other than Murray and McClain now, there is nothing to be concerned over. Except waiting to get a long term deal done with Dez.
I expect a few Mincey / T. McClain type players to be signed in a few days or so. And that worked out decent last year.

This does generate some football talk for the next 2 to 3, possibly 4 weeks, then we can start looking at the draft. As well as the schedule release.

All you have to know is that we were predicted to be the worst team ever last August after a wise and prudent offseason. Every year is different but it still speaks volumes.

The team didn't go 12-4 because of a prudent offseason. They went 12-4 because Garrett pulled his head out of his arse and actually relied on an offensive coordinator who used the strength of this football team which was a great running game.

There are a few reasons the Cowboys haven't had the success they once had but the cap and F/A aren't on the list IMHO. Sure Jerry gave out a few contracts that ended up being poor decisions but there's a reason this team is on the upswing and that's because of better draft day decisions and sound coaching hires.

He was the best example actually. Great player, but Dallas didn't win squat while he was here. That was a Jacksonville-like signing.

Zack Martin, George Mincey, Rolando McClain, Anthony Hitchens, Demarcus Lawrence, Terrell McClain, Henry Melton, Sterling Moore......
