Who’s the best candidate for swing tackle?

Aside from Tyler, the guy with the ability to best play both positions is Waletzko. Given he's likely a back up quality player this year, he probably makes the best option for swing tackle.

I can see why the Cowboys got rid of Broaddus.

Anyone know which players Cowboys picked or considered picking from the advice of Broaddus?

The best option, in case of in game injury or during the week, is Steele moving from starting RT to LT, with either Ball or Martin going to RT.

That beats moving Tyler to LT when he is trying to learn LG IMO.

Also, if they sign a vet swing, where's the roster room for the developmental guys that they must think can be fringe starters considering the draft capital used.

I'd rather bet on the upside of a Waletzko than use that roster spot on a Nsheke or Erving type.

Worst case, I wouldn't think a vet backup swing tackle would be that difficult to acquire at end of camp time if need be. Meanwhile give the kids a shot.

I also don't disagree with the teams approach.

One of my many complaints about the Garrett years was the youngsters didn't always get all the opportunity they needed.

At least give the kids the camp reps. Signing a vet....you know what you're getting....a very meh player who has been there before. Rather gamble on the upside of a young player.

But yeah, Mr. Ball better be ready come July.

I think they really want to see if they have what they need at tackle with FA always a fall back plan
I could see a guy or maybe two added for depth
Maybe a LB to bridge this year till we have our guy we drafted back. I think if ball doesn’t show he’s ready to be the 3rd tackle they could do something there

My guess is shifting the Oline if Tyron goes down. Tyler moves out and McGovern comes in. If Steele gets hurt Ball comes in.

Hard to believe quality OTs will just be waived,
then you have to compete with other NFL teams for them.

Consider all the OTs drafted in the first two rounds and beyond, the OTs signed in free agency. Tackles who are no longer deemed quality starters but are making starters money are usually released at some point if they can’t be traded. That’s a great time to sign guys who are not the answer at OT, but do have experience and can muddle through as a swing tackle. Meanwhile, you hope your young OTs who may grow into quality starters show that they can be the guys to muddle through for a year…..not unlike Steele. Our young OTs should be at least as good as he was, hopefully better.

Broaddus is a tool. Cowboys don't use a super costly 1st round pick for an Olineman to become a swing O-Tackle. Tyler Smith will be starting at Left Guard. Bank on it.

Just because he is getting some work in at the spot doesn't mean they have taken him out of guard contention. In fact, since he was a T in college and considered one that was pretty raw, it isn't surprising they would give him extra time there. We haven't got to training camp yet, so there is plenty of times for guys to settle into their spots.
