Mafi is definitely not a plug and play guy. Round 3 might be early for him. Has potential to be a mauler but he‘s limited athletically. Lucky if he becomes an average pass protection guy.
At least a year, IMO. There’s a chance that he might be ready to try to win a spot by camp 2024. He might be worth the wait though. He has real power.
I don't think his athleticism is a problem as long as he keeps his weight in check.

He weighed 411 when he arrived at UCLA. His weigh-in at the Shrine Bowl was 338.

He is raw because he played DT originally. He was not a full-time starter on OL until 2022.

I think he played some 1-tech before he switched to offense, so he obviously has some anchor. I am not as optimistic as you on when he will be ready. I would MUCH rather red shirt Vorhees than roll the dice when I know he won’t be ready anytime soon.

In my opinion, he is the opposite of Avilia, who is an excellent pass protector, but needs a little development technique wise as a run blocker. Mafi, just like Tyler is a destroyer in the run game and needs a lot of work in pass protection. For what I've heard, he is intelligent and a hard worker. Send him and the rest of our young lineman to Duke to work on his technique as a pass protector.

His draft projection is just difficult to figure out. Understand the likes of Avilia/Torrence are more day 1 ready prospects, but Mafi has that untapped potential as he only has been playing OL for just two seasons. Hell, too bad we cannot make him a two way player and have him play some NT with his former teammate Osa.

Where was Vorhees projected to be drafted before the injury?

I keep seeing 4th round projections after the injury but he looks like he might have been a 3rd rounder before the injury.

He's kinda of stiff and athletically limited. He had the wow 38 reps on the bench but he has really short arms even for an interior OL.

Mafi is one of those prospects that I would want to interview prior to drafting him. Need to have an educated guess on his ability to learn technique and schemes.

In the interviews I have seen, very mature and talks about being a professional

Yeah, that is vital information that we don’t always have. The truth is, the mind is a huge part of if I really like a prospect or not and sometimes, we just never find out that part.

In a case like Mafi, we’d just have to assume the team did that and have a good feel for how hard he works, how quickly he learns, how open he is to coaching, etc.

I think he was looked at as a second day prospect who might move up the boards with a good enough pre draft process… but I didn’t focus on him a lot so I could be off on that.

I think he would have been somewhere in R3 before the injury and would have slotted behind Torrence and Avila for guard prospects. IMO he is a high floor, low ceiling guy but will be a regular starter once he is healed. I‘m not saying I would draft him before round 4…I wouldn’t. But if I were forced to and only had the 2 options, I would choose the one who has proven he will be a solid starter.

p.s. Not the longest arms but about the same as Mauch and Schmitz.

I like the Florida guard I’m gonna google his name and edit this in a second.

Edit: his name is o,cyrus Torrence

I like the idea of a trade down for a first next year

And I like Myles Murphy he is a long defensive end from Clemson
This would be my pick OG O'Cyrus Torrence

OL, RB and TE in no particular order. This is a better offensive draft with some good RB's and TE's available on day 2.

With the Cowboys magic touch with OL in the 1st, they should probably take the best OLA. They are really on a roll at that position in the 1st.

Damone Clark was a 2nd round projection before the surgery (borderlind 1st rounder).

They got him in the 5th.

If a player is R3 before injury it seems that he would drop more than 1 round afterwards.

Yes, higher injury risk for Clark but he dropped 4, almost 5 rounds.

His run blocking looked better then what I recently saw. No doubt he is excellent in pass blocking.
By my count Mazi Smith had 1 win vs Avila (run or pass) in the TCU-Michigan game.

He definitely was the better player pin that game. Mazi Smith looked like he quits after his first move doesn’t work rushing the passer

I’m just going by the projections I have seen and it’s been mostly R4. He could very well go in the 5th but I don’t think he won’t go any later than that. This year is piss poor for projectable guards, so that may be why he hasn’t dropped much. He will be a starter once healed and I’m not sure you could say that this year about the guards drafted R4 and beyond.
