I honestly think it would be very hard to come up with a different choice of 5 from the roster. I think each of us may vary a fair bit in how we rank them.

I actually think Dez is the best right now but QBs are a premium because they are so few good ones so I'd put Romo at 1 for that reason.

Who would be your 5th if you excluded Romo?

And this is what I am getting at though. Aaron Hernandez is not a blocker. He isn't really even a TE. But they get the mismatch they want and exploit it through the running game or the passing game. I just want Dallas to be a little more aggressive and creative in their formations.

Aaron Hernandez is one of the most unique players in the nfl. He can effectively lineup as an inline te, spread out as a receiver, play fullback, hback, and even rb. His versatility is what allows the patriots to run their scheme. They can go power or spread from the same personnel groupings. Every team in the league would love that option, but no one else has an Aaron Hernandez.

Dwyane Harris can only play receiver (and he really was only effective at flanker...which forced Austin into the slot as he has been the last 3 years), making it impossible to run power formations out of this personnel grouping. Harris was adequate, but he is not the type of player you will play in spite of scheme preference.

For an offensive skill player I would choose Harris followed by Hanna, Coale, Beasley and then Dunbar.

We definitely need another RB to add to the mix. It'd be great if we finally spent a 4th to 6th round pick there and grab a good one to backup Murray. The player would need to be an everydown type RB and a change of pace RB.

Dez
Witten
Murray
Harris
Hanna - I believe he could have a Jimmy Graham like breakout 2nd season.

So you value Murray, Harris and Hanna over Miles who has averaged around 1000 yards and 9 TDs over the last 4 seasons?

Let me clarify something I forgot to post in the OP. Who are the 5 best OFFENSIVE skill players excluding Romo. I know, big detail I forgot to add.

Excluding Romo.

Dez
Witten
Murray
Austin
Beasley

I think Beasley and Harris are pretty much interchangeable but I think if Beasley was given more reps he'd be very good at picking up the short-to-intermediate stuff.

I'm now actually kind of reminded about how our first defense got built under Jimmy Johnson. He came here and got whipped by the Eagles mercilessly and decided he needed to find players who could deal with Randall Cunningham. So he sought out a set of LBs and DLs who could chase him down and harass him. I think after the first loss to them in 1992 we didn't lose to them again and basically domianted them the rest of Jimmy's tenure.

I wonder if those lessons are being emulated here by the Cowboys brass to deal with the threat that RG3 is in the division. If you look beyond our division, the NFC future powers also play read-option type football in Seattle and SF. If we are going to challenge in the NFC we have to be able to defend against those guys' mobility. We also have to deal with high powered passing attacks in GB, NY and Atlanta where more speed is necessary to cover the field. The only real good team in the NFC to feature a strong running game is Seattle. Minnesota isn't enough of a threat right now for me to count them. So having a set of LBs who are superior in coverage and with the odd ability to stage a quick blitz are much more important now than the ability to fiercely defend the run up the gut. I still think you need a defense that can do that but having fast LBs is probably better than constantly having to play your nickel against other team's base offense and get bludgeoned in the running game in the process. This seems to be what is happening in some of these read-option offenses - multiple big plays in the running game by getting the QB to the edge against a LB or power running the ball up the gut when a team has switched to a nickel and you are down to 2 LBs to defend the run.

It'll be interesting to see how it all looks next year.

My biggest concern is probably Spencer's ability to supply pressure at DE. I really think he benefitted a great deal from the flexibility to move around a bit for mismatches at LB. I just can't remember many times when he quickly beat an OT for a sack. I remember him doing more in chase situations or when he got matched against a TE or RB. This is why I am so scared about giving him a large contract. I'd have let him walk and gone after Kruger who is younger and cheaper instead. Alternatively, we could have just put Crawford out there and let him split reps with a FA vet nickel pass rusher and draft a replacement this year. I worry tremendously now about all the big contracts and age along the DL - we really should have been looking for someone younger but Jerry just gets tunnel vision about re-signing his own guys.

Anyhow, Kiffen's defense should be interesting next year. I guess you could call it a 4-3 but if Spencer and Ware are lining up standing I think is probably more of a 2-5 defense with 2 DTs, 2 DE/OLB tweeners, 1 MLB and 2 fast coverage OLBs who are okay against the run. My biggest fear is that lineup going up against a power running attack and how they deal with it. It looks like it could be good against spread offenses, read-option offenses and even conventional pro offenses that are pass heavy. But a power running game would be a big test against this lineup.

Hannah--Hannah will be a very productive player for us. I'm stoked about this guy.

1. Witten - tough call for 1, but he does it every year

2. Bryant - not far behind 82, big playmaker looking to turn it up this season

3. Austin - if healthy he makes plays...do something different this offseason, please stay healthy

4. Murray - poor run blocking and this guy makes plays from nothing. Beef up the line and block for this man and he will go off this year

5. Dunbar - A year under his belt and Jones probably gone he will get some more carries. He is shifty and I think he comes out of nowhere this year to make some huge plays for us.

Excluding Romo, I am not sure there are more than 5 excellent skill players, my top 5 are:
1. Dez-by a lot
2. Witten-someone that big and slow shouldn't be that dominant, yet he is.
3. Miles-just needs to stay on the field and focus 100% of the time.
4. Murray-same as Miles.
5. Bailey-the kid is money and looks like a natural.

I think Harris and Beasley have much skill but haven't really had the chance to prove it yet. Can probably put Hannah in this category if we see two TE sets this season.

I so wanted Smith to be in the top 5 but he is not there yet.
