If you don’t know who you are as a team, if your leaders don’t have an identity that they stick with to draft and develop, how can you compete at a high level? The most successful teams in the NFL know exactly what they are trying to be and they acquire personnel to fit that philosophy.

So…Who are the 2025 Dallas Cowboys? What are they trying to be? When we look at this team - especially on defense - I can’t for the life of me get a handle on what they are trying to be.

It’s no surprise. Third defensive coordinator in 3 years and fourth DC in 6 years. Mike Nolan in 2020 wanted position flex. Dan Quinn wanted big corners and a a monster pass rush. Mike Zimmer wanted…I don’t know. Matt Eberflus wants fundamentals; stopping the run and getting takeaways. Ok…how are we built to stop the run?

Offensively Schotty says he wants to run the ball. (Big Mac said that too) But who are we going to use to force the running game on anyone? Who have we acquired at RB to to be a great running team?

So who are these Dallas Cowboys? What are they trying to be? And more importantly, do they have the players in place to be what they say they will be? Do we have a coaching staff in place that can get them there?

Who are these guys?

Who are we? A once storied franchise, the Dallas Cowboys, America's team, the most valuable sports franchise in the world, we're the straw that stirs the drink. We're everything but a legitimate super bowl contender and we haven't been that in quite a while

I like identity crisis questions on a Thursday morning.

These are appropriate to ask because it's indeed hard to tell what they're trying to build. They may shock us all and deliver above expectations but no one who has doubts should be criticized because many things are not clear about this team just yet.

Must be rhetorical I mean that's awful long to be A question that no one will have the answers to until the end of the season..

Have to take the roster you have and develop and tweak your system to make sure they're successful or at least have the ability to be the most successful...

I don't think they know that until they start playing When you're in real games in life situations against game plan defenses you'll find out what you do well and what you have to keep working on to do better.....

New coaching staff, new schemes. They are still figuring it out. Especially the first 2 real games will be like PS games to the starters. Except they get to play the entire games to figure it out.

I believe they think they know what they want to be. But they need to show us on the filed. As usual a new season starts soon. I love to watch football and see how it all unfolds. Not just for the Cowboys, but for the entire NFL.

Once the season starts, I put the past 30 years behind me, and look to see the team improve from week to week.
I will not dwell and consume myself with all of that, which I normally don't anyway. Always looking forward.

At the end of the Bengals game Monday night. Troy Aikman and Joe Buck were basically talking about this.
Both said they like Brian S., and believe he will surprise people and think he will be a very good HC.
Troy said he feels this team will win games and will be better than many are saying.
However, they need Micah Parsons in order to do that. And believes something will get worked out.

The last 8 years these have been play from ahead teams especially the that 5 years. The O has been the same for basically Daks career, you can call it anything you want but it’s a SL, KM offense and I don’t see that changing. There’s no Zeke to pound like Daks first 3-4 years so it’s going to be more of the same pass heavy O. Jerry believes O wins championships and that’s how he constructs his team every year. Play from a lead and keep the pressure off the D because the D is built with few top end players. Poor drafting causes problems for the D when you don’t hit or you pass on superior talent because it doesn’t fit your philosophy. No run game no run stopping D is not a good thing. I also want to know where all those stud RBs in the 5-6th rounds are that a dime a dozen I keep hearing about here. I personally think we will pretty much the same O as the last 7 years and a mid level D as usual

Great question and it's one that sportswriters and fans have been asking for a long time: Who are the Cowboys and what's their identity? There have been two eras under Jerry that we had a strong identity: Under Jimmy of course and under Parcels.

This year it's the same classic Jerry assembled roster with the emphasis on the offense side of the ball, esp O-line and a few playmakers, then with the scraps left from the cap-hit on the offensive players, he tries to build a decent defense. IMO, as Michael Irvin said, "Dak and the offense will have to put up 35 points a game to win since our D can't stop the run" and I agree.

If we can't stop the run, then Dak has to throw 40+ times a game, never a winning formula. I also question this team's depth, but we'll see how the season turns out. Ol' Schotty and Dak will take 99% of the blame and it will be another lost season with no end in sight.

I gotcha jazzcat. BUT....if they go 0-2, the above doesn't let them off the hook. At least IMO.

The FO strikes me as following a fantasy football model. Acquire as many “star” players as you can for stats, pro bowls, etc.

Then pay them above market value, have no plan to give those stars the right kind of supporting cast, and blame them along with the coaches for the team’s failures.

For example, every QB in the NFL - even Mahomes or Burrow or Josh Allen - need to have the right support to be at their best. Even Tom Brady always had a great D in NE and later at Tampa.

Dak is nowhere near those talents but he will never be able to do much without a strong running game and at least above average defense. Jerry acts like because Dak is overpaid,he should be able to carry this team. It’s just inherently dumb thinking.

And the whole team is built that way.

I'm reminded of the scene in Major League when the fans see the new roster.

Until the fur starts flying we can only go by what Shotty has been telling us for months now who they want to be. That’s a physical, win the trenches run the football and get turnovers on defense type team.

I agree with you Rock. But my question is then, who do we have in place to be a “physical, win in the trenches” team? Hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see the talent to be able to impose its will on opponents.

Maybe as some of the young guys develop like Booker and Bebee, or if Parsons can get signed and improve against stopping the run; or if we somehow get more talent to stop the run. Because right now, we don’t appear th have the horses to be what Schotty says he wants to be.

And you’re right that none of us know for sure about this team until well into the season.

They are a reflection of Jerry and Stephen.
What way is the wind blowing ( or More accurately in their case what way was the wind blowing)
