Who builds their own computers?

You aren't getting any beeps and the screen remains completely black?

Most commonly that is a video card issue. Pull the video card and re-seat it. Also ensure you have enough power hooked up to it. I just purchased a Nvidia GTX460 and it took four cables from the power supply. I was lucky I already owned a good 500watt power supply that had enough extra unused plugs.

The video card doesn't need a power cable connected to it.

But yes you are correct no beeps and no video

Based on everything that you've done it could be:

1) Motherboard
2) Processor
3) Video Card

Are all of these components new? Sometimes one of these just arrive DOA.

Only the video card is used

My guess is the video card either isnt' functioning, their is dust in the slot or it just isn't seated properly. Do you have another video card to test with?

Secondly, the other issue it could be is the CPU/heatsink. Did you use it thermal paste between the CPU and heatsink?

The CPU could be overheating so quickly that it fails to post/beep

Obviously, you hope you haven't damaged the CPU/MB pins.

Last, is your memory the type that needs to be seated in pairs? If not, remove one of the sticks and try and boot. If it still doesn't, swap the two sticks and try to boot with the other one.

Make sure the power is connected correctly to the motherboard. There should be the long power connector and then a 4 pin power connector that plugs in elsewhere on the board. A lot of people miss that 4 pin connector. Also, having the power and reset switches from the case plugged in incorrectly to the board can cause a short which could also be the issue.

Oh and I had a very similar thing happen when one of the molex connectors from my power supply got shorted when it didn't make a complete connection with one of my case fans. A couple of fans would turn on, but nothing else would happen.

To see if it is the video card. Take the video card out.

Connect to the onboard video connection from the motherboard. If it still does not work, then it is not the video card.

You can also try taking one memory stick in the first slot with out one in the other. If it still does not work, try the other memory stick in the first slot. If it still does not work try doing the same thing in the second memory slot.

Now of course if it is the wrong memory than it won't make a difference.

This mobo, like mine, does not have onboard graphics. :laugh2:

Seriously?

I don't recall seeing a motherboard (in a loooong time) that does not have onboard video/audio options.

It has built in audio, that will be disabled, no video.

IT IS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was the processor power supply connection.

Thanks for all the help

A lot of the high end mobo manufacturers don't have them. Asus is an example. Can't speak for MSI, EVGA, etc. They figure you'll just put in some beefy graphics card anyways.

One quick question:

What in the blue hell is AC 97? There is a connector from the front panel and I have no idea where it goes on the mobo.

It's for audio. Maybe for a headset?

Check to see if your case and motherboard have HD audio capability. If so, your case will have two similar audio connectors (AC 97 and HD audio). This is a neat little upgrade. You may not notice a big difference for some youtube videos, but maybe so.

Assuming it's intel's system, yes.

^ There is pressure holding the processor in place.

They use those on the servers I install and they do take more pressure than the old school pin type. So if it looks like the above picture then yes it will feel a little different

I'm used to the old pin types so it just felt a little weird to put so much pressure on it.

I'm in the market for a new desktop PC, and was looking at a user review of a certain Gateway model. Here's what they wrote:

"The internet speed download is fixed at about 10Mbs and runs around 9.75. I am paying for RR Turbo with has a download speed of 15.00 and this computer will not download faster than around 9.75, 9.45, etc. Otherwise it is a very nice and otherwise fast machine."

Brand new machines can throttle Net speed? I'm concerned because I have Verizon Fios with 25Mbs down and 15Mbs up.
