Who can we get next year as far as FAs with this spending spree?

Marcus McNeil, current Chargers' LT, then look to add some reasonable depth.

He will be a restricted free agent if the CBA does not get extended.

And there were questions about his back as a rookie prospect as well.

miles austin will be a free agent and will need to be signed. then, marcus spears is a free agent. and if not resigned would have to fill the DE position with somebody who can rush the passer from that side. they can also put ratliff at end ( his natural position and get a big 340 pound guy to clog the middle. safety help and young off lineman who can start if need be ,and be the future

Good first post. Austin definitely needs some sort of extension asap. I don't want him testing the free agent waters again.

I'm not sure moving Ratliff is a good idea. He is playing at a very high level right now and may be the best DT in the NFC. He could be a pretty good DE, but my philosophy is if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

if the player is young throw the bank at him. dont do the same for an older aging player.

You'd best read up on how free agency will work if there's an uncapped year...

First, players who have 4 years experience will no longer be unrestricted free agents, they'll be restricted... same with players with 5 years experience... you'll have to have 6 years in the league to qualify for unrestricted free agency...

And with no salary cap, any good 4th or 5th year player who is a restricted free agent will certainly be kept by his former team... so the crop of free agents will be considerably smaller than you're used to, with more teams bidding on them...

Next, be advised that teams that make it past the wild card round of the playoffs will be restricted as to how many free agents they CAN sign... basically, once you achieve a certain level of success you can only sign a player if you lose a player, and then you can only sign that free agent for the amount that your departing free agent gets from his new team... IOW, in order to sign a really good free agent, you'd first have to lose a really good free agent... either that, or you have to hope that the Cowboys stink it out the rest of this year to be relatively unfettered in free agency...

Finally, keep in mind that there will almost certainly be only ONE uncapped year, and that the following year will have a new salary cap in place... so if you go nuts buying up pricey free agents, in 2011 you're gonna have to figure out how to fit them under the new salary cap...

Basically, no salary cap will most likely NOT be the dream scenario that you're envisioning for the Boys...

I was going to mention him.

I do not think he will be a FA. I think he will be on of the players who is retained due to the lack of a CBA extension.

Surely he hasn't had that many seasons yet.

He'll still be a free agent, just a restricted free agent... and one that the Chargers would probably match most any deal for...

If I could add any 3 FAs....I feel these 3 would bring quite a bit of toughness, leadership, and fear factor to our D.

S Darren Sharper
DL Richard Seymour
LB Thomas Howard

I've liked Sharper for a long, long time, and there's the problem-- next season would be his 14th in the NFL, and he'll turn 35 during that season...

That's awfully old for a DB... as for Howard, I went to UTEP, and would love to have him playing for the Boys, but he's also going to be a restricted free agent, not unrestricted (unless a new CBA is negotiated)... now, Al Davis might be senile/crazy enough to let him go, but I kinda doubt it... if he is, by all means, take a run at him; he has the speed to be an excellent cover 'backer (he ran a 4.42 40 at the combine back in 2006)...

Seymour might not be a bad pickup though, he and Ratliff would make the Boys pretty much bulletproof at NT...

Ummmm, i dont think Jerry spends any money on Big name Free Agents..... Especially old ones.

Under the rules of the uncapped season, teams that advance beyond the Wildcard round are restricted in participating in free agency.

This is to prevent a SB caliber team, like the Colts or Pats, from just loading up in the uncapped year.

So if Dallas finally wins a playoff game this year, we will be restricted. Of course Wade has never won a playoff game in his life, so I wouldnt bet the farm on that happenning just yet.

Call me crazy but I like our defensive line as is, thank you.

All we really need is a ballhawk FS and a LT for the future

Spears is a free agent...I would not re-sign him. I would dedicate my dollars to Seymour for 3 years...and groom someone in the meantime

If there is a cap.......

Get McNeil.......

Let Spears/Hatcher walk........

Draft (2) 3-4 DE's, FS, OL/WR depth

Seymour justed turned 30, Spears is 26 and still improving. No thanks

Spears is having another good year, he works hard and plays hard. Seymour will cost more than Spears too IMO.

He won't be unrestricted with the no new CBA.

Spears is have a great year for a 3-4 DE and has already notched 2 sacks. He has also gotten great pressure this year and that is why he scares me. Why is he just turning it on right now in a contract year? Dallas should throw the Franchise tag on him and trade him in the offseason. He strikes me as a lazy player and someone who will cash it in after he gets paid. Dallas doesn't need any more bloated contracts.

He's been good for awhile, its just that nobody wants to give him credit for it.

He's getting more chances in pass rush this yr because Canty is gone and Hatcher still hasnt come on enough, so his PT is up. Spears is also getting reps at DT in the 4 man nickel fronts, and he's really doing well in that role, especially the past two games.

People like to say we bought championships in the 90s, but it's not true. That team was built through the draft and trades. Even if there is an uncapped period, the recipe for winning will still be the same - DRAFT WELL - churn the roster.

Any sort of an uncapped spending spree will be a bad idea.

No way we get Sharper. No way.

I'll give Ken Hamlin the rest of the season to decide on whether or not he needs to be on the outs. I'm tired of new players needing time to adjust in the secondary.

I would like us to get shawn merriman. At least to spell our outside linebackers.

Casey Hampton if he is available, but again depends on Savaii's development, he had a really good game sunday.

Depending on Roy Williams' development and Patrick Crayton's consistency, and still to mention Miles Austin. We might need a FA and draft WR.

Offensive Tackle.

The rules change as well with the uncapped year you do not just to go sign up anyone you want in fact Free agency is even harder to get good players unless they are older vets.

It goes to 6 years before a player is available for FA if I am right so if a guy like Austin is coming up on his 5th year he is not a FA and some other rules are in place. I do not remember them all but it is down right bad for the players as well as owners

In fact if you make the playoffs you get down right screwed in the Uncapped year

Here is one of the articles about it
