Guys, I for one have determined that one Marcus Spears is a big dissapointment for a 1st round draft pick. He's now going into his 3rd year with the squad and has yet to pay any major dividends. This guys just doesn't seem to have it and I am not impressed. One of those typical situations where the guy looks great in college and lost in the pros. Should we start calling him "Shante" Spears? LOL.
Let's hope Wade figures out he has a problem with this position with a seemingly less than motivated player. Bottom line, we have a problem that needs to be fixed at DE position.
Thoughts?

spears will be in the pro bowl within the next 2 years. Spears has been a victim of being in the wrong system for him. Its like putting a sq peg in a round hole,, you might get it to fit, but it will never be right.

He hasn't played well, but it's too early to be disappointed in him.

And I try to do what Parcells used to preach - forget how you aquired the player.

Scouting reports as I recall stated he was not an overly physical player for his size.
He was best suited when using his quickness and not matched up in 2gap responsibilities.
This year Wade will use him correctly and all the excuses are out the window!

Yes, however, I thought RANDY "The Manster" White was AWESOME!

Anyhow, yes Spears has been a disappointment and he so much agrees when discussing his two year careet.

Wade is going to put Spears in position to reach his potential with the new defensive schemes......no more read and re-act.....this defense will attack

In Parcells defense the DE's main priority was to take up space so the LBers could rome around. It was like having 3 NT's. I think he will be a lot better in Wade's more aggressive defense. I remember hearing the DE's for San Diego raving about Wade's defense and they were saying how much Spears is going to like it. I'm not worried about him at all.

Didn't he play the 4-3 defense in college, if so the 3-4 might not be spears gig, but he played pretty well last year when I saw him, though he didn't get many sacks he was tough against the run and had pretty good push on passing downs.

I'm hoping with Wade and different blitz schemes he can play a little like Luis Castillo..

If he's just as mediocre under Wade, then he'll be a disappointment.

I still have high hopes for him but have not been impressed thus far. He will enter his 3rd season and I hope the new system will make a difference for him.

He's yet to get through camp healthy.

Our D, especially the DL has a chance to be scary good.

I don't think many if any people would have rated Castillo/Olshansky ahead of Spears/Canty coming out of school.

Let's see them in an apples to apples comparison in Wade's scheme instead of them pinning their ears back while we occupy and engage.

I agree, that there will be no more excuses should Wade put in new defensive schemes that will assist Shante Spears in stepping up his game significantly.
The guy hasn't shown us jack to date.

I've heard this often, but it just isn't true, especially on passing downs. We played lane responsibility, which means he is responsible for 2 gaps per play essentially. Our defense was designed to predominantly rush four players - 3 lineman and a LB.

Parcells even called Spears/Canty out for not appropriately rushing the passer.

Nice to know that there are a few of us "old school" guys around here who remember and appreciated the outstanding Cowboy stars of yesteryear. The Manster was something special, was he not?

I personally loved Olshansky.

Spears will excel in a one-gap role IMO, which Wade is implementing on the Dline, as he was a one-gap DE at LSU, he's not going to be the greatest pass-rusher, maybe 4-5 a year, he's just best making plays in the backfield, not necessarily getting after the QB

What he said. I don't expect 8 or more sacks out of him. I just am tired of seeing him taking too long to check out of rush coverage & not overpowering or at least out maneuvering the tackle or guard.

Well can we agree that in Wade's defense he will have more opportunities to rush the passer and make plays.

I agree with you brother. At this point, I'd have to call him a bust. Perhaps those clamoring for us to wait and see just how "great" he can be under Wade are correct. Let's hope so. Personally, I have my doubts as to just how motivated this cat is.
